Haunted, A Halo Story (With a special surprise!)

Hello again! I have decided to post my story here, on b.net, rather than just linking to an external source, as that is a nefarious and dastardly practice here in the gallery. I will submit the story in various updates spanning the next week or two (or month or three). I am a highly punctual man... Nevertheless, I hope you all enjoy the story. I have made a very bold assumption with it, and I hope it makes for a fun read. Leave comments, let me know what all of you think! Various accents and cosmetics might be left out, depending entirely upon how lazy I feel the particular moment of the segment's update. To quote a group of wise and cagey men (and women), see you star-side. [Edited on 11.27.2011 10:30 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: blade246 Just decided to stop by, haven't posted in quite a while. Just curious, but when is the Haunted novel over? I have been reading since around the time of its beginning and am very interested, but was just wondering when it will be over?
Hm ... Well, that is difficult to answer, to tell the truth. I am planning on writing a "Part two", which will hopefully be about two thirds the length of part one. If I do that then there will be a part three to wrap it up. Otherwise I may just make a long part two and finish it there. All told, I am hoping the story will be roughly twice the length of Haunted, but of course that is subject to change. I have a definite vision, but lack the time to write in great quantities. But I shall try!

 • "Haunted pt. II" (Working title) The flash of light was blinding; more brilliant than the glare of a thousand suns. Cruz hung weightless and terrified at the sight of Sigma station; his final beacon of salvation, as it was rent in two, it's delicate framework dissipating into wisps of molted slag, the thin halos of the station proper spiraling into the atmosphere of the gas giant below, spinning lazily until their collision with the planet's dense atmosphere shattered their fragile arcs like glass. Cruz looked around, desperate, delusional from an air recycler that had reached capacity hours ago. Minutes ago a column of ghostly light had appeared, cutting a swath through the starlit sky before him. He watched, mortified as it made it's way implacably toward the station, no longer a speck upon Epsilon B's horizon, but a real, tangible structure looming just beyond his grasp. • Good news! I have officially begun to write Haunted's follow up. I have literally just sat down and put about ten minutes into it, but when I have completed a full segment of the story (and perhaps given it a proper name), I will create a new thread for it. Until then, because I am an impatient man, and because I feel more material has been long overdue, here is what I have written, the first draft, ten minutes in. (Feel free to cut me some slack if it is not up to par with Haunted... It will be, by the final draft!) Look for the thread soon.

 • [INCOMING INTEL]... I am very happy to say that I will be writing a follow up to Haunted in the near future. I am not sure as to how quickly I can write this one (Haunted took me a few months, and that was when I had some semblance of free time), but it will feel good just to be able to write and post. I find it is a great confidence-builder for the other projects I am working on. Stay tuned! [Edited on 03.21.2012 7:55 PM PDT]

 • Thank you both! It is a major life change, to be sure. I actually finished Haunted in the hospital the day after having her (though, strictly speaking, I didn't have anything. My lady did that part.) Oh, and to Phoenix, yes, just follow the legend at the bottom of the reply box. Just do not forget to add the slash in the closing bracket (eg: to do italics put a lower case i between two of these bad boys [], type in your text, and then repeat step one with a forward slash before the i, like so- ) I hope that helps. • Alright. So I have just finished reading Primordium, and cannot believe that my assumptions with Haunted were as correct as they were! Regardless, I would still be as proud of the story if the book went another direction, but it is really cool to see that the legitimate storyline didn't shoot Haunted completely to hell :) There is much to cover in Bear's final book, however, so by no means am I saying that I am 100 per cent correct in my assumptions. But as of now, the story lives!

 • Oh, I forgot about Mission Impossible : ) I actually have always liked that name for that very reason. G.M.T.A.! A few months back I had a baby girl. If she turned out to be a boy, Ethan was going to be her (his?) name.

I am really glad you enjoyed it. It is the first story I have written in a long time that I have been really proud of. And as for the keeping on writing... I will! I hope to do another Halo story in the near future. Hopefully this one will not be quite so long as Haunted :D

 • Oh, they've added font sizes, colors, spoiler buttons. Essentially, they have made it easier to format stories and such. On top of that, they have added buttons for quoting, italics, etc. (And for everything else, for that matter.) It really just makes it easier in general.

 • Hm, Can't say that I knew that. Interesting. As for the state of the story, you are correct. Italics and bolds do a fair job of portraying changes of emotion. I suppose I am just a perfectionist. I always have an ideal vision of how something should be in a story. All in all, b.net did a good job, though I must say that I like the new tools over at Waypoint a bit more. Oh, and thanks for the tip on using Chrome. I never knew that. I am not the most literate person, when it comes to technology :S

 •
Posted by: A Fat Bell End fonts and accents, posting any story in a forum is limited, to say the least.
Well you have the italic, underline, and bold tools here. I'm not too sure what a change in font can do that one of those tools can't. They would both show the emotion behind the words. Accents? Those aren't used in the english language. However if you copy and past this in to Google Chrome, then highlight the word and change it's language, Google Chrome will edit it and give you the option of using an accent. Eg. Usanos = "Use us" in Spanish, however we are missing an accent on the n. Úsanos is how it should be spelled. How did I do that? I highlighted Úsanos and changed the language. Then Google Chrome said it was spelled wrong so I corrected it. Just make sure to switch back to English afterwards. When you do, it will say the foreign word is misspelled, but you already know it isn't.

 • Another heads up. I have just re read Haunted here in the forums, and am not very pleased with the grammar and accents. When I had written this, I was using an archaic word processor that didn't have a spell check, and as far as the fonts and accents, posting any story in a forum is limited, to say the least. It has been an old gripe of mine, as many of you know. To remedy this, I am creating a website for the story with the final draft, and at some point the story will be featured in the upcoming community project, Halo: Warstories, which should be a great project. If you want a PDF of the story, just message me and I'll try to get it to you.

 • Hey, just a heads up. Am beginning a new project, which is requiring me to research tomes (if there can be tomes in the boundless ether that is the internet:D) of information on twelfth century Ireland and Gaelic language. It is for my daughter. I may well be posting some of it in the flood, in hope of shamelessly using you all as a collective sounding board. it will be a fast paced story (In that respect, not all that dissimilar to Haunted), with a feel that will bring to mind... Oh, I'd say the Last Apprentice series is the first to come to mind, if any of you have had the pleasure of reading it. Just figured I'd throw this post here so as not to create an unnecessary thread. Keep an eye out for it!
