Sysops of destiny.wikia.com and bungie.wikia.com

I'm currently in the process of creating a forum bot to hopefully be of some assistance, entertainment, etc... for bungie.net in the near future. Some of the things I'd like to be able to do is to use information from sources like Google Search, YouTube, Wikipedia, and so on to find the most relevant and appropriate responses the bot can give (I've been playing with it here if you'd like to take a look at what it's capable of). For example, when someone asks where the latest mail sack is, they should receive a link to it. Given that destiny.wikia.coma and bungie.wikia.com might be able to provide some of the best responses to the kinds of topics on bungie.net, I'd very much like to use the information stored there too. Getting the information itself from both sites isn't really that difficult (wikia.com has an API for its sites), but the most pressing question I have is how good the information is. So what I'd really like is some feedback from the administrators (or anyone who has used them) of both sites on how well maintained their respective sites are. This could include how quickly information is published on the wiki from when it is first published, spam/abuse prevention, how accurate they believe their articles are, and so on.

  • Wood is a hard, fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as a construction material. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. Wood is sometimes defined as only the secondary xylem in the stems of trees,[1] or it is defined more broadly to include the same type of tissue elsewhere such as in tree roots or in other plants such as shrubs.[citation needed] In a living tree it performs a support function, enabling woody plants to grow large or to stand up by themselves. It also mediates the transfer of water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. The Earth contains about one trillion tonnes of wood, which grows at a rate of 10 billion tonnes per year. As an abundant, carbon-neutral renewable resource, woody materials have been of intense interest as a source of renewable energy. In 1991, approximately 3.5 billion cubic meters of wood were harvested. Dominant uses were for furniture and building construction.[2]
Seriously though, that sounds like a hilarious project, I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out >_>
Hi, daz, I'm an admin on both wikis (lists of admins on each wiki are located here: Destiny.wikia and Bungie.wikia). Just saw this thread. Info on destiny.wikia is excellent. Fully up-to-date on all confirmed facts re Destiny so far. Destiny.wikia is the most comprehensive of the several Destiny wikis out there, so it's a great info source. Of course when big information dumps happen (big press events, Beta launch, game launch, and so on), there will be some lag in waiting for editors and authors to update and add new articles. The info there is extremely reliable; all assertions of fact on destiny.wikia are reference/citation-supported right there in the article, unsupported assertions of fact are removed, and Destinypedia gets a lot of attention from the Wikia staff, so the level of confidence in Destinypedia is very high. Bungie.wikia is good, especially for Bungie lore, but there's also a ton of "noise" -- pages about specific users, specific employees, private groups, and so on, that can be significantly outdated or sometimes incorrect. As you might imagine, defacement, vandalism, etc. happens pretty frequently on those kinds of pages. Bungiepedia has no referencing or citation system to speak of, so it's difficult to assess exactly which pages are fully accurate/up-to-date. Bungie.wikia serves as more of an information repository than anything else. I'd like to be a bit more strict about that wiki but honestly I haven't had the time between BNet and the insane amount of work on the Destiny wiki, and it doesn't seem like anyone else really has time to step up to the plate on Bungiepedia either. Anyway, Bungiepedia is fairly unreliable as an overall matter, but is actually pretty good and reliable as a source of information strictly about old-school Bungie lore. Lemme know if you have other questions, man. :-)

        • That sounds like a really good and helpful idea, so good luck to you with that.

        • Now this is a neat idea. I can see why you'd be wary of of the wikis. For example, looking at the most recent activity on Bungiepedia shows that three days ago someone defaced the Disembodied Soul page, and it has yet to be fixed. The issue seems to be that their is simply not enough activity on there to effectively moderate the site. (Note: I'm not an administrator on those sites, I'm just taking note of what I can see publicly.)

            • Sounds like a good idea. I've always wanted a proper search engine first after using the one on Bungie.old, which really didnt work well.

            • Hmm, anyone could change those sources right? So you could try to make your own source... That may work as long as you know who is constantly updating it...
