Darkness: Fallen from the light

So I was thinking about the factions of Darkness and where they came from, I thought it was strange that they fight amongst each other and that they showed up in the Solar System around the same time. If they just want to destroy Mankind and the Traveller, they don't need to fight against each other. So my thinkin is this: what if the Traveller visited the Cabal, Hive, Fallen and Vex as well and uplifted them the same way it did with humanity? But they wanted more then what the Traveller gave them. They wanted to corrupt the traveller to suit there needs. The Vex had/have a dark 'god' in the black garden that leeches light from the Traveller, it can also bring dead/inanimate things to life (remember those statues?). The Hive had a piece of the traveller on the Moon and were worshipping/corrupting it to gain power. There is also a grimoire card that tells of a gaurdian captured by the Hive and then being drained of its light by its captors. Furthermore the Fallen worship a machine god shaped like an orb that gives them power, like an miniature traveller. So, what if they all want to taken the Traveller and use corrupt it for their own goals? It would explain why they all fight against each other. There are also religious and mythological stories like this, the Garden of Eden, the Box of Pandora, the Cornucopia, the bag filled with the Winds in the Odyssee. Humanity was given a great gift, on one condition, humanity broke the condition and the gift was destroyed. Sorry for the long post, but what do you think about this?

  • The Darkness has been the most used but also the most vague concept in Destiny. Traditionally 'darkness' means 1. Lack of light (Light) 2. Evil 3. Lack of knowledge or understanding. There are some contradictions to the way "The Darkness" is used in the game. Vex, Hive, Fallen and Cabal are The Darkness but The Darkness also left to come back. We have to fight the Darkness now and here but the Darkness has also retreated to the edge of the Reef. If all the enemies are The Darkness why are they fighting each other? If all the enemies are The Darkness what are they fleeing from? We are told from the start that we are fighting for the Traveler against the Darkness, but The Stranger tells us to choose a side. I though we already chose light? (it could also be that she was not referring to us). If the Awoken are touched by Darkness, how could they also be blessed by Light (be Guardians). I think Darkness is a catch-all term for things that are not controlled or fight for the Light of the Traveler. And/or things that we do not understand. Kind of like how the Romans called all non Roman Barbarians. Another large concept in the game is lost knowledge. We know little about the collapse and almost nothing but myths and stories about the Golden Age. Which seems not so golden. Of the little we know from the Golden Age, one fact was the Humans had some reservations about accepting the 'gifts' front the Traveler as it made us dependent on it. We are undead warriors of Light, blindly following the Traveler's/Speaker's will. That doesn't pain a very noble picture of humanity. I think the Darkness, is our lack or understanding.

I've finished going over that Ghost's report. It is my hypothesis - a hypothesis at best - that the Vex saw the abominable presence at the heart of the Garden as a divine power. I can hear your protest already: how can machines have a god? The answer is simple. The Vex, for all their voracious intelligence, could not understand or decipher what they found. They searched through all available reactions, and they settled on the course with the greatest payoff...to worship this power, and to remake themselves in its image. I believe the three Axis Minds found in proximity to the abomination were Vex machines built to serve as vessels for this power: a way to extend its reach across space and time, binding it to the Vex, and the Vex to it. If they had succeeded, I cannot begin to guess what horrors they would have unleashed. Attend carefully. There is cause for hope. When endangered, the abomination activated these vessels and defended itself. This tells us that it was threatened. Whatever it was, Guardians could harm it. And it activated only a single vessel at a time. Its strength was limited. Whatever it intended, it was not ready yet. We must assume the abomination was part of something greater. And we cannot flinch from the terrible, obvious comparison: just as the Traveler acts through us, this power was able to act through its own servants. Let us be wary. There may be other abominations, and other vessels. Ikora[/quote]

    • I see it more in this manner. If the Darkness is a guiding forces behind all of these factions then one of the other is likely the case. - These Alien Species do not know they are serving the same partron - Or more likely they do and cannot risk the other groups gaining the favour of the Darkness by eliminating the traveller. As such they actively try to hinder one another whenever possible.

      • Interesting post. I'm wondering what if the Traveller didn't abandon these races, at least not intentionally. What if the Traveller's mission is to elevate others to a certain point and then move on to help the next system. It may not have realized that the Darkness has been following it. Hunting the Traveller. And so every race that the Traveller has visited is soon visited by the Darkness shortly after the Traveller's departure. The Darkness then corrupts those the Traveller has elevated, thus strengthening the dark forces and weakening the light. It wasn't until humanity's golden age that the Darkness finally caught up with the Traveller while it was in the process of elevating a people.

        • I'd be very curious to see what the Hive and Vex would do if they were in the same area. They're the two armies that I consider the Darkness or at least darkness-aligned, but they're not at the same locations. I definitely think that the Fallen had been uplifted by the Traveler, and the traveler abandoned them, either because of something that they did or to escape the Darkness, or just because that job was complete. And now the Fallen chase the traveler, trying to regain its favor. As far as the Traveler goes, I can't decide what I think it is. Is it a benefactor, a harbinger? Is it the gardener that that the Ghost Fragment: Mysteries grimoire card spoke of, or is it the narrator or that card(I'm leaning towards Rasputin being the narrator)? My biggest fear is that Bungie doesn't know the answers either....

          • It would certainly make sense why several different species of aliens are all compacted into our tiny little solar system at the same time. It would also give reason as to why none of the races have tried to destroy the Earth, or the Traveller. There's a Grimoire stating that the Cabal have altered the orbit of Mars' moon Phobos, and have it aligned perfectly to where they could actually send Phobos hurtling towards Earth and destroy us. Your theory would then prove the reasoning behind what is now sitting as a MAJOR plot hole imo. As well, I think what we know of the fallen also backs up your claims! We already know that they "were once a proud race", and it would make sense how such incredible power could possibly have corrupted them as a whole (This would also explain the several factions of Fallen and the in-house fighting they are plagued with: possibly differing ideas on the Traveller, their culture, etc.). Great theory, I do hope this is the way they're taking the story. The last civilization of mankind protecting this incredible power from corruption, surrounded at all sides? Sounds pretty epic to me.

            • There cannot be light without the existence of darkness. Thus is the balance in the universe. I think, if anything, the Traveler is trying to disrupt this balance by using us as means to an end to rid the universe of this "darkness" which is in truth something that keeps the traveler in check.
