With the introduction of the Grimoire cards in the beta the trading cards finally make sense. They look exactly like the Grimoire cards do having a picture on the front and a description on the back. Pretty sure it just unlocks the digital Grimoire card on your Bungie profile. (just speculation of course, but it makes decent enough sense).
