In the article it says that Hive souls escape from the bodies when you kill them. But they were definitely talking about the Fallen (and DeeJ gave the example of the Fallen Captain whose soul ripped from his body after death).

According to Bungie's postcards for each race, isn't the flash of light coming from The Hive their soul? After seeing that, I assumed that The Hive can possess other races, which would explain this: http://www.bungie.net/pubassets/615/dark_patrol_desktop.jpg
