Hello there,
A name reset to default like that means it was detected or reported, reviewed by Bungie and reset to"Guardian####", that indicates that some part of the name broke the Code of Conduct or the Bungie Name Policy, was filtered, and cannot/should not be used again. When that happens, you get the new name cross play message in-game as notice of the name change.
You can try a different name if you have a name change available. If the system is not allowing more changes, there is no way to override it.
I appreciate the reply but I do not believe that my name violated the code of conduct as I have had the name for over a year with no problem, seeing many, many names that I could recall that violate the code of conduct that are still in the game and have not been taken out. This problem has not risen for me until now and I think there are more names that have not been changed that definitely should be. Now knowing the origin of my name change I feel as if the code of conduct is being used selectively and not applying to all players.
If the name was moderated, Bungie staff evaluated the name and made that decision. There is no appeal for name moderations.
Length of time a name is used is not a factor in determining if moderation is required. Having it for a long time just means it evaded early iterations of the filter system and/or reporting.
If you see other names that you feel are not in alignment with the code of conduct or name policy, feel free to report them for Bungie to review.
