I dare you

To tell me something interesting about yourself. Not your hobbies or special interests, not the kind of music you like or your favorite color. Something interesting about YOU. An experience. An accident. A moment where your worldview was turned upside down. Whatever it is, it has to be interesting. I tire of checking Offtopic to see more posts about your favorite Star Wars show. I’ve been here long enough to watch your creative abilities peak and plummet. I remember having fun with the people I spoke to. You can’t tell me a hundred posts about another bungie game is real entertainment to you. I don’t care about the opinions of tweenagers. I don’t care if your mom just bought you your favorite fast food. It doesn’t matter if this album spoke to you. I want to read something worth reading. If you can’t do that, you don’t get out enough. You could even lie, but none of you are good liars. Your responses will be rated. I miss being here.

    • This is gonna take a bit of backstory. My wife has an "uncle". He's not biologically related but was really close with her actual uncle who died young and has always been considered family until a recent falling out that's neither here nor there. He used to invite us to join his family every Chinese New Year. Anyway, to the story. One year there was this guy who'd recently returned to Taiwan (where I live now) from the US. Knowing I was American we got to talking and over time it got me thinking. This guy was born and grew up here in Taiwan but moved to the US in his 20's where he lived for over 40 years. He was in the US when we landed on the moon and when Woodstock happened. He could vividly remember the fall of the Berlin wall and 9/11, two things I too lived through but the former was too young to understand the significance. I moved to Taiwan in 2006 but this guy continued to live there after I had left. And it occured to me... which of us was more "American"? Yeas later, a new question has emerged. I moved to Taiwan when I was 22 and now have lived in Taiwan longer than the vast majority of my students, or even many of my friends and co-workers' children. I have first-hand memories of events in Taiwanese history that they don't such as when Taiwan the arrest of a former president, the sunflower movement, or when Taiwan became the first Asian nation to legalize gay marriage. On top of that, I have family here. It may not be the culture I was born into but it's one in which I've been engrained for nearly half my life. And sometimes that gets me thinking... If that guy was more "American" than me (or equally as American), does that make me more (or equally) "Taiwanese" than many of my students?

    • Last summer I had a bad work accident and got pinned to an old rusted out F-150’s frame by a winch chain. It crushed my right hand and all four fingers but my thumb. After letting out more winch I was able to finally pull my hand free. Every time we would let out winch, the vehicle would shift and I’d get pinned again. Got my hand free, carefully removed my glove, and realized most of my right ring finger was severed. Got rushed to the ER, bone was turned into dust on that finger and split down the middle right above my top knuckle like a mermaid tail. Got stitches and was told nothing could be done by a hand specialist. Was also told I completely lost my mail bed. After several sessions of PT, a ton of support from my parents and loving gf at the time
spoiler alert she’s now my fiancé
, I’ve made a full recovery. It looks mostly normal and nerve damage is a problem sometimes but that could take years to work itself out. Even grew back a finger nail and my bone dust collected to form a solid finger tip on its own. I am even back to working at a gun range part time as a hobby job. But yeah that was my hellish summer last year. Same day I also had awful poison ivy and an allergic reaction that gave me a horribly itchy rash from the antibiotic the ER gave me. Then two days later I had a successful Lasik operation. Hope you’re well Glope.
also loot and poly will be at my wedding. Loot crate is a grooms man and him and i are flying to Florida this week for a music festival
Rearranged the bottom shelf of DVDs in alphabetical order when I was around 1 or 2. Was fun. Would consider working at a library, haven't looked into it though. Prolly won't. Third day working at the theater, I hear a coworker over the radio calling for a manager saying something about an old guy stripping in the first men's bathroom stall and pooping everywhere (only stall with a lever instead of automated too. not important though.) Thought I was tired and hearing things, so after I finish with the theater I'm working on, I take my 10, come back, turns out I heard correctly as a coworker updates me, and the ushers (that also means me) gotta get tshirt rags and wipe up a trail of wet ploopidoop at the bathroom entrance. (Manager and initial radio usher and captain took care of the stall itself.) I finish with the bthrm entrance, and apparently the man left a trail to the lobby (he did, the carpet was dark but the stains were there.... I gotta go and tshirt rag the tile (thankfully) lobby floor. What sucks is, I never saw the old guy that did it.
Another incident with stall 1, caught a couple trying to do something in there. Guy n girl. Bold, but silly.
-- Today, had to tell two separate couples at the ends of the same row to sit in their own seat and not on top of the other. (Not in the sus way. They looked comfortable though, blankets and all. can't blame em.) Edit: we have Banana Icee. Not bad, but very weird...

          • The story of when I learned the importance of curtailing my curiosity. I was a child, finished my bath and I noticed for the first time that there were these coiled, metal wires at the end of the blow drier. I wondered if they were hot. For some reason, maybe because of the convenience of proximity, I tested it by using the tip of my wiener.

There was one time I was stoned af with my buddies cruising round town and I was so blazed that I decided to turn around in a police department parking lot. Got a funny look from the cops but didn't get caught. Then my buddy got so upset he had to do a backwards dive out of the back seat to throw up up while hanging upside down. He didn't want to get out of the car, don't ask- I don't know. It was all very impressive. All I know is that in that moment I came this close to getting arrested with forbidden lettuce in my possession, and I discovered that my friend could puke upside down and held him so he didn't fall out of the car. He may have been a little drunk too. Lessons not learned- memory captured forever.
none of these newbs have lived long enough to have any neat stories yet- you're shouting at headstones.
• I enjoy being helpful. Sometimes to the point where I skip out on the fun or make myself suffer so someone else doesn’t have to. I typically also feel guilty if I’m enjoying myself with my friends when there is work to be done, although, that’s half the time I get to see them. However, I’m really only good at physical labor work. I give awful advice. (Sorry if this sounds really generic. I’m not very interesting)

                    • I have an insatiable love of statistics and fun facts. And though I struggle with some school subjects there is always a random fun fact or niche football player stat I could tell you on the fly. I don’t really know what it is about said facts but it’s a niche thing. Most kids tell you they want to play in the NFL but I want to work for the NFL or ESPN or FOX. You get the idea. Um….. my second toe is my biggest which apparently means I have French royalty in my blood so that’s cool. I also do a lot a stop motion art. I’m not confident enough to post it to the Internet but I can do some mean Lego and clay animations. My voice work needs some tweaking though.

                      • I have a rivalry with all bugs that are yellow and striped. They just dislike me in general. It doesn’t matter if I’m sitting on a bench somewhere or at home, they always find where I am. I’ve been stung on many occasions and in many different places. Backyard? Easy target. Fishing in a pond? Naval warfare. Boat docks? Great for sneak attacks. They just don’t let up. Currently, the score is in favor of the yellow stripey bugs, but recent years I’ve made a slight comeback, taking out a few of them with bug killer.

                      • When I was around six I was really into collecting and collections. I guess I fancied myself some sort of a paleontologist or something. So anyways, I was living in Maryland at the time, and we had had these raccoons getting into our trash and our neighbors' trash, and they were pissed, so they poisoned their trash can. One night, my parents are outside disposing of the Raccoon because after taking the poison it went crazy and got into our trash, impaling itself on a hole in the side of the can. So it's really gross and my parents are trying to dispose of it and I'm also out there for reasons forgotten to history. I start crying unexpectedly, and when my parents ask what's wrong, I wail inescapable and haunting words that are now repeated at every family gathering:
"How can I have a raccoon collection when I don't have any raccoooooons?"
