You not reading the parameters of making progress is not a bug in the game, but I do agree its a tad nuts to gate progress behind using only two subclasses

If you hover over the Iron Banner node on the Destinations tab, you'll see the challenge. If you don't, it means you've completed it. Progress is made by using either Stasis ot Void subclasses. There will be 4 days worth of challenges total.
