Now Oryx is by far one of the most terrifying Villians, so you’d expect him to be the greatest nightmare to face…yet he isn’t one despite him being the #1 candidate.
All nightmares have a thing in common, they’re all foes we faced and they’re all dead now. (Not counting Taniks, is he even really alive or just a shank with legs and arms, well previously with legs).
So that leads me to theorize, Oryx isn’t a nightmare because he isn’t actually dead.

Nightmares don't have to be dead. They simply have to have left their mark psychologically. We got Taniks a year before we finished him in Deep Stone Crypt. The Fanatic can't permanently die, and Calus' nightmare in Duality is Caiatl, who is very much alive

由Quiet_Bushi編輯: 6/16/2022 7:34:45 AMGood question, indeed. As other have already noticed, Nightmares are Darkness based entities manifested from the Lunar Pyrimid Ship as past figures and enemies to exploit the trauma and worst fears of Guardians and other beings (currently, for example, we know that Mithrax and Caiatl have seen them too) as part of a psycological warfare (my source for this definition: https://www.destinypedia.com/Nightmare). From this point of view, Oryx never harmed us so deeply to cause this kind of trauma if compared to what Crota and Ghaul did. Crota slayed thousands of Guardians on the Moon during the Great Disaster and Ghaul managed to conquer very easily the City -considered almost impregnable thanks the Walls, the Guadians and the protection of the Traveler- , imprisoned the Traveler and took the Light away from us. Losing the Light has probably the worst thing ever happened to the Guardians in the Risens' history. In the exact opposit, Oryx, the Taken King, which should have been one of the greatest menace, was defeated shortly after arriving in Sol and before making too much of a fanfare becoming one of Guardian's greatest success. One might discuss that he should be a Nightmare manifestation for the Awoken that have lost their Queen and their Prince during the attack to the fleet on Saturn, but since they are not cooperating with us right now in the operation on the Derelict Leviathan and since they never went on the Moon during the Shadowkeep Arc, is comprensible why we haven't heard of Oryx manifestating as a Nightmare. This is, of course, just my speculation. EDIT: I've edit my post to correct some grammatical errors.

Your theory falls flat when we talk about the nightmare of the fanatic. You know, the guy who cant die. But there's still a nightmare of him.

Most probably because he was a Taken before you kicked his butt a second time. Ps. He is gone you took him out while in his Throne World and he fell into Saturn's atmosphere. Not even his worm is left.

You don’t have to be dead to be a nightmare, look at caluses night mare his was for his shame, for us it makes sense to be a foe since our guardians don’t have a previous history, I think ours should be crota since we avenged the hundreds of guardians he killed and he was more prominent than oryx. but for others it’s not just about enemies, zavala is his grief or whatever, calus it’s his shame/greatest love, crow is his past,

From my understanding is that the Nightmare in question has too have been an actual fear for guardians or a massive threat. (Not saying Oryx wasn't a threat, he definitely was, he probably was one of the biggest) but Oryx didnt do anything aside from wiping the queens army. His dreadnaughts still floating on the rings of saturn. Crota slayed hundreds of thousands of guardians(they won't shut up about it) Omni-ghoul aswell, inlcuding a part of Eris' fireteam. Taniks was a monster during the Fallen war and Nevota wasn't our nightmare but the NewLight players (according too lore) the lore on her suggests she's the NewLight slayer. Gaul for obvious reasons. Aside from The Queen and her people, Eris and ourselves nobody really had an encounter with Oryx.

I've wondered that myself except nightmares don't have to be dead to be nightmares. Caital is Calus's nightmare and she is alive. Fikrul and the mechanist are both alive and nightmares. Nightmares are the physical formation of an individuals regrets, fears, anguish, ext... Also a better question is, "why isn't Tr3-vr a nightmare?" It was more feared than any foe we've ever faced.
-
He didn't really do much to us though. His son, Crota invaded the system and caused all kinds of damage, After we killed Crota, Oryx came looking for revenge and didn't really get very far. The Awoken immobilized him and took big losses but after that we just went in and killed him.

His beating heart is in a gun we made. So...yea...he never died. His body though....eewww

Nightmares are Forms of Regret, not who's Dead. The Reason Oryx isn't a Nightmare....is because no one has Regret killing him. Fikril is a Prime Example. He's alive, yet a Nightmare, one of Crows.
