Have a solo play list, like in Iron Banner. Gear/weapon drops/cards are "normal" trials drops. Save adept/neon bling drops/cards for full fireteams. That way casual Trials players can get the nifty stuff they want, the ultra competitive twats get their holiest of holies to lord over each other. The solo list helps develop/motivate the formation of full fireteams more than the current method of clubbing baby seals.
