If you look at franchises that allow you to carry anything over from one game to the next, it's almost exclusively limited to your character, and if applicable, storyline-altering decisions you may have made. There are almost no games that allow you to carry over one game's inventory from one game to its sequel, so Destiny is not doing anything out of the ordinary.
I'd like to point out that Pokémon, one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, lets players import stuff from older games. It does this fairly well.
While not many games do this, I think that Destiny, with its infusion mechanics, impressive collection of Exotics, and amazing ornaments would have been perfect for it.
It's kind of a double-edged sword. It's a new game, so new gear is to be expected. If there wasn't people wouldn't be happy (the ususal arguments about paying for stuff they already have). If they make a bunch of new gear, but let us carry over the old stuff, they would need to make the new stuff stand out in some way, otherwise what's the point? But if it's too good, no one would use their old stuff, so why alow the carry-over. If it's not as good as what we're carrying over, everyone would stick with the old stuff, so why bother with making new stuff.
I don't really see a guaranteed way to make everyone happy, so this is probably the best way. Everyone will be on even footing, no worries about one or two D1 weapons outclassing anything in D2 and all the new players getting upset that they can't get that particular gun, and if they do happen to throw some of the D1 classics in, it'll be a nice bit of nostalgia for the D1 players. I mean, I'm well aware that anything I get from doing the new raids isn't going to carry over. I have no real need for the exotic adept guns. As much as I liked Fatebringer back in the day, I don't need a new one as I have Zhalo, Oversoul Edict, and Necrochasm if I need an arc primary, so I tell myself getting the raid challenges done doesn't matter, but then I watch videos of people doing VoG, and all I can think is that I would really, really like to have Vision of Confluence (my first elemental primary) back again, and I imagine they'll try to get that kind of response out of people in D2.
