I'm not a Bungie official, but I'll answer this question to the best of my ability.
When people speak of Hive Wizards using witchcraft, they are talking about how they use the power of the Void and the Darkness to perform tasks and attack us. Now we refer to these as spells and Wizards pretty much always perform them by reciting incantations (such as the Deathsinger's song). In relative terms, this is almost exactly like the mythical witchcraft that people were accused of using in medieval times (back when people accused people they didn't like of being witches just so they could be burnt at the stake), except the Wizards are using the power of the Darkness in these rituals (called rituals because they follow the Darkness's philosophy religiously)
We call what the Wizards do witchcraft and use other words that we would associate with witches because that is the closest thing we can relate it to
I hope I answered your question properly. If I didn't, please tell me which grimoire u r referring to so I can hav a better understanding of the question

由zfr0016編輯: 12/4/2016 2:42:45 PMSo when they use incantations, meaning, a charm or spell created using words, used in witchcraft to cast a spell on an object or person, it is what it sounds like then? Now I would agree with what you are saying only to an extent. My sake of argument against “we call it witchcraft and wizards because it is the closest thing we can associate it to”, is that they use that terminology themselves and they should understand it better then anyone else. They understand it and explain it in their religious infrastructure as witchcraft, spells, demons, netherworld, and incantations. It is not something the guardians coined.

Actually, the Hive don't use terms like spell, demons, witchcraft, or incantation, especially not to describe their own abilities. This can be proven by reading the Books of Sorrow. They refer to what they do as calling upon the Deep, redefining, or with terms referring to killing. It is similar to what we call witchcraft, but only in the way they do it. What they are actually doing (manipulating the Void) is far different than calling upon spirits to do things for u. Humans use the term witchcraft to explain what the Wizards do because it is something similar that they already fear. It is the closest word they could find to describe it without coming up with a new word, and they even use "witchcraft" to describe what Voidwalker Warlocks do (manipulate the Void). Witchcraft is a feared word, so they use it to describe what they fear and what they do not understand (and yes, some citizens of the City fear Warlocks for their mastery of the Void, which is known to be the power that minions of Darkness can use)

Well u need to remember that the Books of Sorrow are translated into human languages. Witchcraft is the closest single word to what they do, otherwise you'd hav to use a long sentence probably. Also, back when they were plotting to kill the Leviathan, they hardly knew anything about the Darkness and the Void, so it makes sense to use the term witchcraft I'm aware that Savathûn is the Witch Queen, but witch is synonymous with wizard, so since that's the word we use to describe them it's natural for her to be called that

It was written in Hive tongue first, then Oryx probably translated it into every other language he was able to learn. Either that or our Ghost or possibly even Eris translated it for us. Most languages don't hav proper translations for some words in other languages
-
If it were the case that all that was said and done by the hive was replaced by human terms in the books of sorrow, then really nothing in the books of sorrow could be said to have happened as is stated. Meaning if us humans defined them by our terms, and they define themselves by human terms by our translation when supposedly we are directly quoting them, then everything is made up regarding their very existence.

No, when I mentioned the translating I meant that there are probably words in the Hive language that do not hav English translations, so witch and wizard and such are most likely rough translations I've told u everything I know or believe on the matter, so if u haven't changed your mind then I didn't hav enough proper evidence and we can agree to disagree. I hope some Bungie employee or someone else with more knowledge can answer your question

You should try posting this again in the Help forum instead of the Lore forum (although u can still give it a Lore tag as well), people from Bungie go through the Help forum far more than the others and typically respond to questions
