The way me and my friends play pokemon to avoid the constant switching is to play out your first choice pokemon and once one of you faints you get the opportunity of sending out the better pokemon. It makes for interesting battles as sometimes the type advantage doesn't always win (ash taught us this) plus nowadays pokemon can have many moves to cover weakneses. You can always try to predict switches which makes the game feel like a chess match to see who fails predictions. So many torkoal yawn sweeps haha. Just have fun man!
