I don't know if this metaphor will work but here it goes. This is how I think gamers will see this with their own expectations.
People from the regular FPS crowd like Halo 4 and COD will buy this game and expect it to be Rock, Paper, Scissors.
In FPS games:
Rock: Heavy weapons (Rockets Launchers, Grenade Launchers)
Paper: Semi and full automatic weapons. (Assault Rifles, Battle Rifles)
Scissors: Power Weapons (Shotguns and Sniper Rifles)
They see that players get a primary, special and heavy weapons which makes them think this game is Halo: Reach with better graphics.
However, people who know their facts like USplendid know this game will play more like Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock.
Lizard: Class attributes (Armor/cloth ratio, class abilities other than supers) and vertical jump abilities (Blink, Glide, Thrust Jump)
Spock: Supers
People from the former group will get infuriated that they can't jump into Destiny and be instantly pro at it. Bungie isn't trying to re-invent the wheel but merely adding new things that will slightly alter the experience but still keep the fundamental principles intact.
You forgot to mention that the character that has the best raid loot available will poo all over the CoD people who only did enough PvE to get to the multiplayer.
