Welcome to gaming in the late 2000s.
When the whales became the target audience for these "live services", you can't own anything, you have to keep just renting stuff, paying extras even in full-priced products, and they can take it back, gotta read all the fine print, without any legal consequences.
The only way to change this is to step back, not give them money, and watch the whole thing collapse.
It's happening already, Bungie is proof of that, Ubisoft is proof of that, BioWare is proof of that, Firewalk Studios is proof of that, and the list goes on and on. A very unprofitable list.
Gaming became an expensive, unrewarding hobby because of the greed of a few and the infinite capacity of many, many players to accept trash if they still have some fun with it.
