It's not even close to effective in practice unless you've the discipline to keep practicing it or the money to see someone regularly.
Stick to the SSRI's and then if you think you can do more try it.

You don't need to see someone regularly, and there's plenty of support groups out there than can offer help. Obviously you have to want to change for anything to actually change, but once you rid yourself of those poor mental habits it becomes second nature.
