Edit 3 would only benefit them if there are actually plans to expand the playable world in House of Wolves. If there aren't, it could only hurt them to come out and say in no uncertain terms that this is all the explorable geometry we're getting until Destiny 2.
That said, I have a feeling "Destiny 2" will be a sequel in the same sense that Burning Crusade was a sequel to WoW. If my hunch is correct, it [i]would[/i] benefit them immensely to clarify that the "expansions" are glorified map packs and the "sequels" are actual expansions.

Yeah that's pretty much it. Activision, doesn't [b]want[/b] to be honest, they would only do that if they thought they would benefit financially. If bad news is on the horizon (skimpy dlc), then we won't hear about it ahead of time. They might, however, make unfulfilled promises (lies), as with the story in this release.
