I wouldn't start with 3- you won't get it. Start with 1. Witcher is a must-play RPG for anybody that calls themselves an RPG fan because it is unlike any other RPG you've ever played. You know how games like Mass Effect or KOTOR or SWTOR or literally any other RPG have good choices and bad choice? Yeah, Witcher doesn't have that. It has shitty choices, and shittier choices. and you're constantly forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. The thing is, you know the PR phrase 'your choices will have consequences' then you get an item in those games and never hear from the choices again, or they influence small dialogue changes? Yeah, in the Witcher these actually- seriously- change the story. An entire chapter can take place in a different area depending on a single choice you make. Some people will die. Massive consequences both in the game and in the lore. I highly recommend it. Now is the perfect time- the Steam Summer sale is upon us. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not buying it for that story. OK. I rambled. Your actual question... you are Geralt of Rivia. You are a Witcher. Witchers are monster hunters- people pay them to kill monsters. They are genetically modified and trained, both processes of which very few people survive. It also makes them sterile. In the first game, you die. In the first cutscene. Somehow, you are revived though you forget your past. Other characters tell you about your past as you try to remember. When you are back, the fortress of the Witchers is attacked and valuable documents and spells are stolen. You spend the game trying to both get retribution and recover the important items. As you do, you are entangled in schemes of great political intrigue. Witchers are neutral in all matters... but Geralt will have to pick a side. Witcher 2 continues very soon after the first game. I can't tell you what it's about though because it contains a massive spoiler for the first game. Suffice it to say it is its own self-contained story but with massive details being in the first game. The 3rd game involves the Wild Hunt. And this... is also something hard to explain without ruining big parts of the earlier games. You ever played WoW? Think of the Wild Hunt like the forces of the Lich King. That's as much as I dare say. I honestly do recommend the games.

So The Wild Hunt are like the Scourge? They are undead dudes risen from the grave?

Vaguely. Not exactly. But it's a similar concept.

Can't do it. Don't google it either! A lot of people don't like the Witcher for its gameplay. The combat is unlike any other game you've played. But Witcher is a game played for the story. And if that story is spoiled beforehand, you lose the best part of the game!
A lot of people don't like the Witcher for its gameplay.
The gameplay does suck. I played the first and second Witcher and couldn't get around finishing either because of how tedious the combat and gameplay in general was. Major disappointment both times, because the RPG elements and story sound great. I just can't force myself to play a game with such off-putting gameplay that makes playing feel like a chore to get to the lore.
