Wha are your goals are you going for fun or are you trying to learn experiences from it? Also, are you hiking or just going to spend a few nights in the same spot? Are bears or other rodents a problem? Are you cooking? So many factors. I just need to know a little more of what your plan is. Essentials: Pocket knife Water bottle (recomend a nalgene) Way to purify said water.

Get a bear bag and hang it up in a tree away from your camp site. Put any "smellables" into it. Food, deoderant, pretty much anything not naturally made except your clothes, knife, glasses, etc. How far do you plan on hiking and do you want the weight of a tent? If you are going to use a tarp like many people have suggested, I suggest you familiarize yourself with some basic knots. Square knot, tauntline and bowline should be good for you to start with. Since its your first time, bring your phone. Do you plan on navigating with a map and compass or are you just plan on walking a trail. Are you bringing food and water? I suggest a nalgene bottle. Make sure you bring some form of purification if you are just bringing a little. You don't have to bring some fancy pump thing. You could buy iodine tablets or simply boil the water for a few minutes. I don't suggest the later, because there is no garuntee you wiill get the fire started. Before you go, notify someone that you are leaving and if you are not back within x amount of time to look for you. There is a whole lot of things to discuss if this is your first time, but most importantly Be Prepared. EDIT: post a picture of your pack.
