As someone that sherpas, I've spent countless hours on an idea like this. I just don't have the technical expertise to make this a reality.
It could be presented as a "simulation" where new players can be exposed to the raid in a tutorial-like setting. Each encounter is broken into small, digestible roles to allow for easy understanding. Players can launch into any portion of the raid at their leisure to focus on specific roles/encounters that give them trouble.
Most sherpees I've encountered aren't fearful of the actual raid, mechanics and/or difficulty. What generates anxiety is the feeling of letting someone down and/or wasting people's time.
If there was an option to allow players to learn the raid at their pace, I truly believe that the raiding population would flourish in numbers and open up a whole new demographic to raiding.

In D1 there was only one Nightfall level. Then in D2 the Nightfall experience improved by offering multiple levels of difficulty so that player could either improve or complete the level appropriate for their skill level. Bungie never put any effort into improving the raid experience. Consequently, it ends up with fear, frustration, gatekeeping, and KWTD.

I generally don't get time to raid and have a poor memory. When I do, you're spot on that my concern is letting people down. I've solo flawless a dungeon so I'm not really concerned with the skill aspect. 9

I always tell my sherpees that it's a game, and we're here to have fun. You're not letting anyone down. So many times I hear, "I'm sorry". What is there to be sorry about? Trying something new? Learning a role? Mistakes are okay and that's how we learn. -
I honestly can't say on the occasions where I've tried an lfg for raids that I've had a bad experience. The planets encounter took an age in Root because we all had different ideas on the planet numbers. Got through it in the end, though 🤣 My clan does raids but because I'm not reliable on when I can be available, I never put my name down. I'd love a crafted zaouli's or a commemoration.

(If you need it) My tip here is that you need to get everyone on an encounter like planets to demonstrate they know what to do before you start the encounter. Usually this means the Sherpa making a call that would be made during the encounter and the person then shooting the called planet. And maybe do a second one to make sure. Do this for everyone in the fireteam. Pretty similar in gauntlet in leviathan where different calling systems or methods would get people stuck. Basically investing 5 mins at the front saves hours because getting wipes due to some lucky calls getting you most of the way and then failing on damage phase 3 is -blam!-. Also need to make it safe for people to express they aren’t 100% sure. You’d rather them say they are wrong now than find out later when we wipe. These encounters where it’s hard to hust be an ad killer only really test out comms and mechanics understanding.

Thank you. I think that’s would be fantastic for someone like me. I’ve been to a few raids and the teachers have been very kind and patient to take me and others through the encounters, but many times a simple mechanic had taken hours because of the ads and people like me (newbies) can’t do both mechanics and ads. There’s been other occasions when other players would just get tired, and put the newbies on ad clear, which is totally understandable. In general a practice mode I think would help people like me to get into raids more often. I appreciate your comment. 🙂
