There is no canonical “the guardian” unfortunately. There was meant to be but they changed it. Now there can be a hero from 1 who is different than 2 but it can also be the same. The only canon heroes that carried over was the trailer team and they were killed off.

  • Yes, the whole veteran dialogue situation and what not. Honestly, the way I view it is that the Guardian is a canonical character. We are simply playing a version of said character. But within the lore, the Guardian is a singular entity who experienced the events of both D1 all the way up to the present day. They are the one who lead the Raids, and the primary operative within every Campaign, outside of Dialogued characters.

  • I wouldn’t disregard it, it’s a narrative mechanism to maintain basic logic. Kinda hard to be the D1 Guardian when you’re revived post Red War and dialogue differentiates the two as separate people, right? So it serves a purpose. That was the whole point of having veteran dialogue. To show a difference. Otherwise they would have just had veteran dialogue be the default, which would have canonically affirmed a singular Hero. It’s from them retconning the story is all. That’s why it’s so sloppy.

  • To begin with, the guardian IS canon since he is called "Slayer of Oryx and Young Wolf". And the guardian is totally canonical, from what we see in the 4 DLC of the first game. The guardian of New Light (The Campaign) is not the same, and usually, that guardian, I woke up in the snowy cosmodrome, in quarantine, in other part of the place. And second, that team of guardians that appear in the trailer are not the same. The Titan is a man in the base game trailer for Destiny 1 and The Taken King, the Hunter is a man, and the Warlock is a woman, all human. In the promotional trailer and on one of the game covers, they are seen wearing different armor and different weapons. Also, the guardians that appear in the Curse of Osiris trailer already had a name, or at least one, which was Reed-7, yes, an Exo titan, a hunter and a Warlock. and the 3 guardians of the red war trailer. The titan and the Warlock are men, and the hunter is a woman. So, generally, they are not the same.

  • Guardians who are made in D2 are not called Slayer or Wolf. They don’t have any accolades from D1. Only veteran Guardians who are imported from 1 to 2 are called that. That differentiates the canonical hero of 1 from 2 if you aren’t a veteran Guardian, so by definition the Hero can not have a canonical identity. If it can be different people, it obviously isn’t any single person. Which is what canon means, a definitive version. Likewise the Guardian carrying Cayde means nothing. If you are playing a Titan from D1 to Forsaken, you don’t wear a cape and therefore that can’t be your Guardian. You’re making illogical arguments and claiming what is and isn’t canon.

Not really. If your Guardian carried over from 1, it’s the same from start to finish. If it’s a base D2, then it’s two heroes If it’s a post DCV New Light, where you can’t play the early D2 content, then it’s two/three heroes. Bungie has made things to where it’s irrelevant and hasn’t clarified how it really works. Just whatever self inert I find it incredibly crappy and disrespectful to their own game, but that’s what they did.

I admit it, yes, my arguments are totally illogical, and meaningless, but in my mental canon, the guardian is a hunter.
