Ahsa, Worm Gods and Ahamkara - Bonds in the Deep

The following is based on the lore found in the Siochain's Scuba Shell lore tab. I don't consider it to be spoilers because you are free to read the lore tab from Collections, even if you haven't unlocked the Shell itself in-game. Within the lore tab, we learn that Ahsa is a "Proto-Worm", the species the Worm Gods belonged to before they became what they are. They had access to Deep magics even in the past, but the Witness corrupted the Proto-Worms with the ideology of the Sword Logic. Ahsa fled through the Ascendant Plane from Fundament, while what remained of her people became the Worm Gods. As an aside, I believe this means the Proto-Worms were the race that originally inhabited the Ascendant Plane before the Witness corrupted them. Ahsa has forged a bond with Sloane, and we are able to receive gifts of power from Ahsa during the Deep Dive activity. Alongside what we learned of the Qugu and Ecumene from "Root of Nightmares" lore, this caught my attention because of what we know of the Worm Gods and their power, the Anthem Anatheme. The power to "dominate the objective universe with subjective will" is one the Worm Gods share with the Ahamkara, and both are capable of using this power to form "bonds" with individuals, though we know how those bonds are twisted to the Worm Gods' and Ahamkara's benefit. With the Worm Gods, we know they feed through the Sword Logic - the act of killing another being to "prove your existence", and the Worms which are in symbiosis with the Hive need constant killing to be fed. If they aren't fed, they'll devour the Hive. It is a "bond", but one more parasitic in nature. It wasn't always their inherent nature, but a product of the Worm Gods embracing the Witness' ideology. Ahamkara wish-magic is the same, as it forms a bond between the wisher and the Ahamkara, acting on wishes to change the world to conform to one's desires. The Taken Riven made such a bond with Uldren after he made a wish to save Fikrul, but it corrupted Uldren with Darkness and turned Fikrul into the Fanatic. Even regular Ahamkara wishes were considered so dangerous, they sparked the Great Ahamkara Hunts. But that isn't what Ahsa has done with Sloane. Their bond allows them to communicate with one another, perhaps stave off Sloane's Taken corruption, and even give us gifts of power with no price attached. Quite in contrast to the Witness' philosophy, especially now that we know it introduced the Sword Logic to the Hive in the first place, races who are "blessed by the Deep" used Darkness as a means to form connections with other beings, and even commune with the memories of past ancestors, in the case of the Qugu. But to say Ahsa is using the Anthem Anatheme is most likely inaccurate. The common phrase used with it invokes ownership or subordination of the target individual. Ahsa and Sloane's bond, on the other hand, is mutually beneficial. Further, according to Ikora, just as the Worm Gods seek the Sword Logic, the Ahamkara seek the Anathematic Arc, a way to become "more real" and escape this universe into one either subordinate or superordinate. Ahsa, on the other hand, only seeks a bond with another living being again.

Bungie changes the lore constantly on the worm gods Originally they were the big bads behind the darkness Then we see they are push overs Then we find out they are little more than slaves Then we are told they are born deep in alien oceans (cant remember the exact quote but its akin to that) Now we are being told that they weren’t even worms to begin with but another species that was transformed into worm gods Hell even old lore said they were corrupted Ahamkara
