I thought political discussion and religious discussion was always banned. Remember the old Bungie website with the long list of forum rules? There would even be carpet bans for threads like that.

When the New New Hawtness dropped, there was total relaxation of the rules. Except for more serious offenses, users were expected to use the mute button when necessary. This consequently allowed political/religious topics up until a few months ago.
