I mean, besides for his wine and pretty purple crystal floor, what else would they be mining for? It’s kind of clear that they have no need for funds, considering the absolute [b]UNIT[/b] of a ship.
Maybe they use that excess material from his wine-making to create his robots? Idk.

<I mean, you do need fuel and I'm sure some of the planetary materials, if not most, gets donated to the engines to keep them a-going. I'm sure they find use for materials, and I'm certain those Calus bots are part of them.>
