Solo the level 30 Crota raid. You can practice as much as you want there.
Edit: I hope this doesn't come off as a snide remark. I mean it sincerely.

He will have to practice how to get to crota first, which means he will spend more time practicing something he doesn't want to practice. There are other places he can use.

I used to be able to run the sword in Yr1, and I recall being able to get 3 hits very easily. Now I'm struggling with getting 3 hits consistently. Are you sure the timing is exactly the same between the 390 raid and the level 30? Perhaps it's been too long and I've aged more than I know... /me puffs contemplatively on a pipe

It's actually easier now. He doesn't attack you as soon as he starts to stand up anymore.
