If the TPP doesn't go through, china will become a superpower and we will be left in the dust.

  • I'm not sure a country that's still ass backwards culturally and has few R&D incentives that relies mainly on cheap exports could ever become a superpower

How do you arrive at that conclusion?

  • Because china will take our place in the deal and then they will start making the rules.

  • And? If china wants to hand over the sovereignty of their country to corporations let them.

  • They will start making the rules for the entire world, not just themselves. The TPP is not going to take jobs from us, those jobs are already gone. The TPP is not going to cause wages to go down, the wages are already down due to globalization. If anything the TPP will help regulate those pacific economies that are prone to "slave" labor conditions, like in many countries, and will make American labor more competitive in the long run. Obama is spot on in supporting this and because he supports it almost all the GOP are already leaning against it. The progressives don't like it because it grows American soft power and helps business, both targets for the progressives and both are perennial issues around which progs form their group identity. I can only hope and pray that the TPP is seen by more over time as something worth supporting. If the US is to remain a power, we need to embrace these trade pacts as they are one of the last big cards that we as a nation can play in regards to international power. This deal really doesn't worry me at all. And everything will cost way less for us because of it.

  • Lol, a bit late to worry about China becoming the superpower. Why are you so worried about them? Their foreign policy is pretty much just "hey trade with us and allow investment and what you do in your country is your business", a lot better than the US "hey we spend too much on killing people for ideological reasons and to prop up a corrupt petro-dollar". But hey, you can always go bomb someone to make yourself feel better. China don't do that.

  • The simple fact of the matter is that using China as boogeyman isn't a good enough reason to pass a fundamentally flawed Trade agreement. The positives being pushed about it may well be true, but the negatives are also just as much of a reality, and only a fool chops off his own arm to save his legs.
