One part of the Bible:
I have seen the face of God.
Another part:
no one has seen the face of God
English

What verses is this from?
-
I think the first one was Genesis.
-
The first part was metaphorical, the second was literal.
-
How does one determine what is literal and what is metaphorical?
-
Context usually. The first one comes from the creation story, which is regarded largely metaphorical. The second one is literally saying it is impossible to know the face of God.
-
the creation story, which is regarded largely metaphorical.
Except in this same comment thread, LORDMAST3RCHAOS is saying that Genesis is literal.

So Genesis is to be interpreted literally?
Yes, believe what you want. You wony change my mind
-
He's clearly being emotional and lashing out at you. You can't use his comments as a weapon against mine. The fact that you are even doing so, kinda shows how shaky the ground is under your argument.
He's clearly being emotional and lashing out at you. You can't use his comments as a weapon against mine. The fact that you are even doing so, kinda shows how shaky the ground is under your argument.
I think you're missing my point. Either it should be interpreted literally, or interpreted metaphorically. But when you both claim opposite positions from reading the same source material, perhaps that means something is wrong with the source material.
-
That's a dumb statement. Anything can be interpreted from anything given enough reaching. The creation story is an account of an event as told to a people who didn't even have a concept of physics yet. You were expecting perhaps a particle diagram of the Big Bang?
-
By reading the whole bible. Dumbass. Read the whole thing before you go against it
-
By reading the whole bible. Dumbass. Read the whole thing before you go against it
No need to be rude. If it were clear which passages were metaphorical, and which were literal, then there would be only one interpretation of the Bible.
-
It is clear if you read the whole bible. And Christians only have 1 bible
-
It is clear if you read the whole bible. And Christians only have 1 bible
I never said there was more than one Bible. I'm talking about interpretations of, not printed variations. Some people think the book of Genesis is literal and took place in 6 days. Some do not. If the Bible was clear about what was literal and what was not, there wouldn't be a discrepancy.
-
Genesis doesn't have to state every detail
-
Genesis doesn't have to state every detail
Why not? Clearly there's a misinterpretation as to whether it is literal or not.
-
It doesn't have to, it states everything that happened, no exceptions
-
It doesn't have to, it states everything that happened, no exceptions
So Genesis is to be interpreted literally? God created the universe in 6 days?
-
Yes, though since time and relativity weren't even a thing yet, who knows what six days actually were. You are also speaking about a being that exists simply because he willed it so. To something like that, it's impossible to grasp how he thinks.
-
Yes, believe what you want. You wony change my mind
-
Yes, believe what you want. You wony change my mind
I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, I'm trying to understand how you determine if a passage is intended to be interpreted literally or not.
