The way it is being back to its original function is a big L on Bungie. It was a huge QoL to have it so coming out of the Vault and back to inventory with Vaulting mode turned off was a win. When I pull something from my vault it's with the intent to equip it, not immediately put it back in. It's common sense (a lacking trait at Bungie) that when you take something out of something for immediate use, the default response in life isn't to put it back immediately after retrieving it to where it came from.
Edit: If someone at Bungie reads this, if the reasoning for it being defaulted to storage when exiting the vault is someone may accidentally equip an item they didn't mean to and lost all their ammo, screw them. The point of pulling stuff out is to make a build. If they unintentionally lose their ammo as a result while they're mid-encounter, they can farm more ammo because they came into it with a make-it-up-as-I-go-along strategy.
No one is retraining their brain for this because it's naturally ingrained in everyone from infancy! You pick something up, and the only reason you put it back, is because you're done using it or you realize you don't actually need it. You are fighting a basic harmless instinct developed at the early stages of life.
For all the DEI stuff and charity work you do, you're a stain to them for the stupid and immoral stuff you do. Like the repeated artwork theft.
