They want tokens to correspond to loot you earned by playing Trials that week. I think that is completely reasonable. The only change I would make is to allow you to convert Trials Tokens to Crucible tokens without needing 3 wins. This would a) allow all players to get rid of remaining tokens without feeling like it is a waste if they don't have exactly 20, and b) allow players that don't get 3 wins to have some kind of reward without the entire experience feeling like a waste.
Imagine if tokens didn't expire. You would have people hoard tokens making the activity completely meaningless to do for rewards. Take Iron Banner for example, most players have thousands of tokens at this point and don't feel a need to play the game mode more than just finishing the quest each season. After that, they just buy whatever they want without playing the game mode.
I'm not a Trials kind of guy, but I feel like hoarding tokens would ruin the loot system (although to be fair, the current loot system is not great to begin with).

It doesn't work the same way in Trials, though. Your Trials loot pool is only made up of weapons and armor you've earned before. It's not a new loot pool you'd be dipping into like with IB each season.

That's a fair point, however, let me give you an example: Let's say with the next round of Trials loot in Season 13, there is a really good Hand Cannon with a top tier loot pool. In the current system, if the HC is in rotation at 3 wins, you need to play that week to get 3 wins, then continue to play that week at a chance for the HC. If you were able to save up tokens, you could just get your 3 wins then buy dozens or hundreds of engrams to get the god roll you want. This means you can get Season 13 loot from efforts in previous seasons.

Literally who does that hurt??

Yeah, very true. I honestly hadn't thought of that use. Now I kind of wish I could save my tokens, haha.

In all honesty, I wish they did the same thing with other materials like Iron Banner tokens. Right now, Destiny 2 allows you to hoard massive amounts of materials which makes getting new gear trivial. For example, I'm sitting on about 20k Vanguard and Crucible tokens, so I'll be able to get any new weapon I want with no effort. I've got even more Gunsmith materials, so even less to grind for.

I honestly have about as much and don’t see an issue. You had to play to get the tokens so what does it matter “when” you use them? Other than obvious (cheaters and toxic players) I don’t play trials because I can’t save tokens. In the end it’s pointless

I know exactly what you mean. I played D1 heavily back in 2015 and then took a break until Destiny 2 came out. I only played D2 for a couple months before quitting for almost 3 years. Despite only coming back this May I have already stockpiled thousands of each type of token and 8000 gunsmith materials. At first I saw it as preparation, but now I realize that I'll be able to get literally hundreds of weapons and armor pieces on day one. It's overkill.
