The Vanguard History

Here I have listed every Vanguard we know of and briefly described their history. This is short because it doesn’t tell the whole story of every Vanguard member, only focusing on when and how each became Vanguard. I have also added links to my lore sources (click yellow text to open the links), for the curious. If you have any questions or want to know the full story of some characters or anything else, please ask and I will happily answer to the best of my ability. For more of my posts, check out my Master Post. First, here’s a chart for those who don’t want to waste time reading. It chronologically shows their positions from top to bottom, first to most recent. The names of Commanders are underlined.
Titan Warlock Hunter Saint-14 Osiris Tallulah Saladin Osiris Tallulah Saladin Osiris Caliban-8 Saladin Osiris Aparajita-4 Saladin Osiris Kauko Saladin Osiris Andal Zavala Ikora Andal Zavala Ikora Cayde-6
Note: We don’t know for certain if Saladin was ever the Commander, even though it seems he was during Twilight Gap, so that wasn’t included in the chart. We also don’t have direct confirmation on him being Titan Vanguard outside the Fall of Osiris comics (which have proven to be inaccurate), so that’s up in the air. So, to start off the detailed explanation, we have two slightly-contradicting lore excerpts on when the Vanguard was formed. The Vanguard Commander lore states that the position of Vanguard Commander was created during or immediately after Six Fronts. This and other lore suggest that the Vanguard was created before Six Fronts. On the other hand, in Garden Progeny 1, Brother Vance writes that the Vanguard wasn’t formed until after the Iron Lords were killed, awhile after Six Fronts. This was written by Brother Vance, so it’s less likely to be completely accurate because he wasn’t born until long after and information from him is often subject to his own bias and occasional lack of knowledge. These were the first Vanguard members, listed in Garden Progeny 1 and some other lore sources: Saint-14 (Titan Vanguard/Vanguard Commander) Osiris (Warlock Vanguard) Tallulah Fairwind (Hunter Vanguard) After being Vanguard Commander for one day, Saint-14 retired and asked the Speaker to make Osiris the new Vanguard Commander. This was shown in Vanguard Commander and also mentioned in Saint-14’s Gray Pigeon. Supposedly Saladin Forge took Saint’s place as Titan Vanguard, but this has not been confirmed and the only direct evidence that Saladin was ever Vanguard comes from the Fall of Osiris 2 comic, which has been proven to be inaccurate. But this is the only info we have on the Titan Vanguard between Saint and Zavala (and we only assume that there was a Titan Vanguard between Saint and Zavala), so for now it’s best to assume that Saladin did become the Titan Vanguard. Eventually Tallulah was killed by an Ahamkara after losing a game of cards, and Caliban-8 replaced her as the Hunter Vanguard as part of their Dare. We have no more info on Caliban. (Tyranny of Heaven) The next Hunter Vanguard we know of is Aparajita-4. We have almost no info on her and don’t know if there were any more Hunter Vanguards between her and Caliban, or if any unknown Hunter Vanguards came after her. Asher Mir was alive for the deaths of 6 Hunter Vanguards, and we only know of six, but his phrasing suggests that there have been more than six so it’s likely that there was at least one unknown Hunter Vanguard before or after Aparajita. (Peregrine Greaves) At some point before Twilight Gap, Kauko Swiftriver was the Hunter Vanguard. We don’t know if there were any Hunter Vanguards between Aparajita-4 and Kauko. Kauko disappeared and two years passed before he was declared dead. His Dare was never found, so the Hunters had to start from scratch to replace him. Eventually Andal Brask took his place after he lost a Dare with Cayde-6. This Dare was a race to kill Taniks, and the loser became Vanguard. Cayde killed Taniks and won, so Andal became the Hunter Vanguard. They later discovered that Taniks was still alive, but Andal decided to stay in the Vanguard. (Turn and Winner Take All) Now we have a bit of contradicting and unsolved lore, specifically involving when Ikora replaced Osiris as Warlock Vanguard and Zavala became the Titan Vanguard and Vanguard Commander. During Twilight Gap, Saladin Forge was supposedly the Commander because he lead the City defenses, but this isn’t confirmed. Shortly after Twilight Gap, Osiris was banished for neglecting his duties and doing nothing to lessen the conflict caused in the City by those that misinterpreted his teachings. Ikora Rey was his student and had already been covering for him a long time while he was distracted with the Vex. She took his place as Warlock Vanguard when he was banished. Zavala was the Titan Vanguard when Osiris was banished, and Zavala became the new Vanguard Commander. (Curse of Foresight) Here the Fall of Osiris 2 comic creates contradictions. We ignore the comic because it’s been proven to be inaccurate, but I’ll share the information nonetheless. This comic has Osiris banished before Twilight Gap and does not have Zavala in the Vanguard at the time, meaning Saladin most likely became the Commander, which actually would make sense considering that in lore Saladin lead City defenses during Twilight Gap. Either way, Zavala became the new Titan Vanguard and Vanguard Commander after Saladin and Osiris, and Ikora became the Warlock Vanguard. At some point after or during Twilight Gap, Taniks killed Andal Brask. Cayde-6, having failed the Dare to kill Taniks, took Andal’s place as Hunter Vanguard. (Taniks, the Scarred) Cayde-6 was killed by Uldren Sov and the Scorned Barons in the Forsaken campaign. His Dare was flawed, stating that the Hunter who killed him would take his place. But he was killed by Uldren Sov, who wasn’t a Guardian and was later killed by us. The idea of replacing Cayde turned into a blame-game that would put an enemy of the Guardians -someone who wasn’t even a Guardian- in his position. Possible candidates start with Uldren and go through the blame-chain to the Scorned Barons, Variks, Riven, Savathûn and even Oryx. Because of this terrible Dare, Cayde hasn’t been replaced yet. Afterwards Uldren was revived by a Ghost known as Pulled Pork, and hasn’t joined the Guardians yet. Players debate if Uldren should replace Cayde, but this is a complicated situation because the Risen Uldren is a different person and currently isn’t a Hunter. Should he appear before the City the Guardians will have to figure out what to do with him and they could decide to make him a Hunter and let him become Vanguard, but it would be a very complex situation. #TaniksForHunterVanguard After Cayde’s death, Asher Mir tells us this: “This is your first time losing a Hunter Vanguard, is it? It’s my fifth -- no, sixth.” We know of exactly 6 Hunter Vanguards. But the way Asher speaks suggests he wasn’t present for every Hunter Vanguard ever. So this most likely means there have been more than 6. Here’s our list, so you can see where in the timeline that Hunter would have been: Tallulah Fairwind Caliban-8 (Possibly more Hunters) Aparajita-4 (Possibly more Hunters) Kauko Swiftriver Andal Brask Cayde-6 Here’s a simplified list of all of the Vanguards:
Titans: Saint-14 Saladin Forge (unconfirmed) Zavala Warlocks: Osiris Ikora Hunters: Tallulah Fairwind Caliban-8 Aparajita-4 Kauko Swiftriver Andal Brask Cayde-6 Commanders: Saint-14 Osiris Saladin Forge (unconfirmed) Zavala
Fun Facts:
Out of the 11 Vanguards we know of 4 have died: Tallulah, Andal, Saint, Cayde 3 are unconfirmed, but most likely dead: Caliban, Aparajita, Kauko 5 are still alive: Osiris, Saladin, Ikora, Zavala, and… *puts on shades* Saint. Andal Brask was a friend of Tallulah Fairwind. This means he lived through every Vanguard change and death (except maybe Saint-14’s time as Vanguard) until he himself became Hunter Vanguard then died. Warlocks have gone through the least Vanguards and are the only ones to have zero deaths. Saint-14 and Osiris are considered to be the greatest Titan and Warlock to ever live, respectively. No Hunter has earned such recognition, but we still love them.
That’s all! If you have any questions, please ask!
