Supposedly one of the drifter lore bits mentions a ghist being unable to revive a guardian who died in the middle of the night, apparently some kind of spooky darkness creature came and drained him of light while he slept. Poor ghost probably felt like a failure.

I wonder then if Ghosts have the same kind of light the guardians have. It feels strange that the guardian got his light drained but the Ghost was still alive

Id be willing to bet ghosts get their one guardian and thats it. Otherwise our ghosts should have been able to heal Cayde, I got the impression that its very uniquely tied to its own guardian. Theres other lore doodads that mention ghosts who never find a guardian to revive, wandering forever around the solar system trying to find a corpse that they can connect with. Might be where a lot of those dead ghost shells in the tangled shore are from.

It’s extremely weird, I always assumed if we die and somehow can’t be brought back our ghost would share the same fate. What exactly does a ghost do when that happens? Do they search for someone else? If that’s the case we aren’t exactly special in any kind of way; just tools following the will of the traveler

Hopefully that'll get revealed in the future; it's been so long since the release of D1 and we still don't understand the nature of light and darkness
-
I think that's the point, though. We don't know. It's like asking a person to understand time or eternity.

When you died in D1, the screen would say "the darkness consumed you". If you take what the Speaker said about the light in the D2 vanilla story, I think the Darkness may have the same qualities

Possible. But it's a strange and unknowable force. Like...we can grasp at it, but understanding it?
