Forget banning guns. Why not just put metal detectors in every school? Airports have them. Banks and many state buildings have them. Why not schools?
I think it hasn't been done yet because America isn't ready to face reality. Schools are meant to be a safe learning environment. And adding metal detectors, x-ray machines for backpacks, and guards with wands who pat you down will force people to be confronted with the truth.
And the truth is...our schools are not immune to crazy people. Currently, it is easier to get a gun into a school than a theme park or a football stadium. There are even churches that have armed security. But not at schools. Because we want to maintain the ILLUSION that schools are safe. That's what's really going on here.
Metal detectors would shut this shit down immediately. Make every school exactly like an airport, where you check your backpack every day, and get wanded by TSA if you trigger the detector. Screw convenience. Screw the budget. Screw your child's sense of safety. If this is what it takes, then this is what it takes. Because we all know that criminals will continue to be criminals. At least this way they'll have to shoot up the school with a plastic knife, and not an AK-47.

I agree. Anything that will make it more difficult for someone to shoot up a school. The only problem is it only addresses treating the symptom rather than the illness. Once schools are locked down maniacs and glory killers will find new areas to shoot up. Malls will get detectors to fix the problem and the shooters will then find new areas to terrorize. The cycle will continue. America has -blam!-ed itself by allowing this problem to persist for decades. Honestly I dont think this will be different. In a month both sides will get tired of throwing shit at one another and they will forget about the whole thing before the next shooting happens. Each group is too interested in getting the last word or coming out on top. Honestly libs you should be supporting the people advocating for improving mental health. That is one area where you both can agree on that addresses part of the illness. Cons stop being -blam!-ing -blam!- and actually get out and protest, e-mail, badger your reps for better mental health rather than relying on libs to do it for you. Stop shitting on each other and start finding common ground. Pull your pants up and stop embarrassing yourself America. end of drunken rant.

Interestingly enough, it’s hard to find a single act or terror TSA prevented
-
It's almost exclusively white kids shooting up schools. As a minority, why should I have to give up my rights because of them?
-
1) Cost 2) Time (tsa is slow) 3) Won’t help... hide guns in bush outside, pull fire alarm go get gun and shoot. Or just walk in shooting. 4) Despite these scary things, similar to jaws they aren’t common. If we as humans fixate on random causes of death to the point it ruins our quality of living then there really is no point.

Uhh... because there’s phones?

How about set up online schools with government assistance. Supply all the kids with the hardware and internet access to do their studying. Live video assistance, streaming lessons and so on. Set up after school programs where kids can get together and socialize. Don't have all the details on this, nor do I know the cost difference.

Most schools where I am have metal detectors.
-
Right... just turn schools into fortresses, with snipers overhead and trenches in front of the school entrance... **clap ... clap ... clap** 👏 🙄
-
I think there are schools with metal detectors
-
Why do you not just limit gun use? It costs less, and increases the overall safety of your country.
-
The problem is we can’t even pay our teachers properly how does any expect this country to do such a feat? Also that whole “Arming” every teacher....again they don’t even get paid enough to provide basic supplies. This school shooting pandemic is a lot deeper than just a mental health and gun reform problem there’s a lot we gotta fix. Also a little bit of information; did you know the CDC can’t run a study on guns. I’m not even joking when I say that.

Because if someone wanted to shoot up a school, I don't think a metal detector is going to stop them. In fact, I think that they would ignore the metal detector, bring the firearm into the building, and proceed to shoot people. No one here is educated on anything politics, including myself. Any supposed "good" idea has already been thought of by someone else and that same person found flaws in their idea.

Shooting was fake

There are not that many churches with metal detectors either. Some do here and there, but alot? No.

There are around 27,000 high schools in the United States. The metal detectors used at airports cost around 4,200 dollars each. Most schools have multiple entrances with a lot of people, so you would need a lot of metal detectors to keep traffic flowing smoothly. So let's suppose there are 6 metal detectors at the front entrance of a school (I mean the shooter could just go through other doors but meh). 4200 x 6 = 25,200 Now we multiply 25,200 (the cost for one high school) by 27,000 (the number of high schools in the US) and we get a total of 680,400,000 dollars. Then you have to pay for the training of all of the people who work the stations, pay said security guards, pay the people who will install them, pay the people to maintain them. This is only high schools too. Where I live, there are 6 elementary schools that feed into 2 middle schools, and that goes to one high school. That will also add to the already high cost. Yes, I get that the children's lives are much more important than the financial costs, but there is a much more cost-effective way to protect the schools, and it doesn't involve turning it into a maximum security prison. In 2016, there were around 40,000 homeless veterans and 453,000 unemployed veterans. If we took veterans who were mentally healthy, trained them to protect schools, we could create a huge number of new jobs, give veterans a stable income, protect America's youth, and not significantly alter the budget. If 100% of unemployed veterans were able-bodied to do this, we could give schools an average of 16 more security guards. This will make a potential shooter think twice, seeing as he is now not shooting completely unopposed (our high school has one or two on a regular basis). Just my two cents.

I don't know what's worse, you thinking this would actually work or... You know what, this is a very stupid idea.

Why not put armed guards in schools? Airports have them, banks have them and most state buildings hsve them.
-
I find it rather ironic that people will constantly ask for the government to do things that would require a substantial amount of money, but they constantly keep wanting tax cuts which is what pays for such things.
-
Изменено (Soviet soldier): 2/20/2018 10:52:33 PMMy school uses metal detectors, but they only use it once every 2 weeks and they only check 20% of the kids entering. This is because metal detectors are expensive, so there are few to begin with, and if every single student that entered had to be checked it would take hours.
-
Except, some schools already do have metal detectors. And they've had them for years.
-
Cost That and having to have a couple people man each scanning station along with the equipment would be just too much for most school districts to accommodate in their budgets. However, I fully believe that having a couple armed security guards on the premises wouldn't be anything that would break the bank, nor is it something today that would be fought over doing. Having them scan each student coming into the building is the gray area. That would take an extreme amount of time, as well would require even more security as well as scanning equipment to speed up the process. There is no easy answer here, because it's unfortunately a needed requirement, but the fact that money drives every decision makes it much more difficult. In the high school my youngest son graduated from, they had used iPads for many of the classes his entire high school years. It was a costly expense, more than regular book fees, which were all jail broken by the students and were rarely used for their intended purposes. The kids were smarter on getting around the safeguards than the staff was at implementing them. That said, it was a colossal waste of money to supply kids with their own personal youtube devices during class time.... They should scrap that and get back to books, and use the money on security measures rather than play things. The lids actually learned less (got dumber) because of the iPads.

Some schools have Metal Detectors.
-
You tried to make this sarcastic but it actually is convincing.

Do you realize how much metal students carry on them these days? You’d need some TSA type of shit to check students, and could you imagine how much hell that would be to do that every day? Especially for schools with 1000+ students
