Scarlett Chapter 6

The exo picked Scarlett up and carried her west of the little town to an overgrown shed in a small grotto. Vines climbed the walls forming a natural camouflage. A light rain dripped off the leaves of the large trees around them. As the exo moved towards the small structure he set Scarlett down to open a garage door, exposing a dry room filled with ammo, rations, and spare materials. In the center was a scrap metal sled with a small tarp over the top providing shelter inside for its occupants. The exo scrounged around the room looking for ammo and food to fill the sled for the journey. After finding what he was looking for he strapped the supplies to the outside of the sled and pulled it out of the garage. He picked up Scarlett and gingerly set her down inside. Silently he grabbed hold of the sturdy rope attached to the front and began to drag it north. As they were traveling Scarlett had plenty of time to think, she thought about how much she missed her ghost, she thought about the generosity and kindheartedness of the exo who helped her in her time of need. And the more she thought the more her mind was drawn to a single name; Ghaul. She wanted to kill him so much, to avenge the deaths of the innocent, to avenge the tower, and to get payback for the loss of her stuff. "Have you figured out my name yet?" The exo called behind him after a few hours of walking. "Is it Shayde? Gayde? Does it end with Ayde? Or am I in left field." With a pleasant chuckle the exo turned towards her and tossed her his sidearm. "I figured it would be pretty obvious, but you must have been focusing on other more pressing matters." Reading the inscription on the pistol Scarlett said the name aloud, "Chatterbox." Scarlett then tossed the gun back to Chatterbox. A few hours later Chatterbox suddenly stopped, and stooped low to the ground, pistol ready. "What is it?" Scarlett asked "I think I hear movement" Creeping forward Chatterbox pushed aside some underbrush to see a small squirrel scurry away. "It must have been no-" Chatterbox turned right into the barrel of a vandal's gun. "Drop your weaponssss." Chatterbox looked past the vandal to see two more watching Scarlett. Sensing defeat he dropped his weapons to the ground. "Good, now die guardian sssscum!!" The vandal hissed as he pointed the gun at Chatterbox. Chatterbox shut his cameras down so he wouldn't have to watch the vandal pull the trigger and end his life. Three shots rang out, and Chatterbox activated his cameras in fear. He scanned the immediate area, only to see Scarlett sitting in the sled with a smoking gun, and three vandal corpses on the floor. "I'm not even sure how I hit all of my shots..." Scarlett said to herself. "Thank god you did! You saved my life!" Said Chatterbox. Picking up the rope of the sled once more he began dragging her along. Since exos needed no sleep or food, he was able to advance at a relatively fast pace, allowing Scarlett to regain her strength over the days to reach the rendezvous. Scarlett dozed in the sled while chatterbox silently pulled the sled further and further. After days of travel Scarlett and chatterbox could see a busy clearing, full of people and guardians alike. There was a line to board a hijacked transport thresher, with a small screen that counted down how many more people would be able to board. The small screen said 3, they had gotten there in the nick of time. Lifting Scarlett out of the sled chatterbox carried her to wait in line. Behind them a mother and a young boy got into the line, but an armed robot pushed the mother away. "Maximum capacity has been reached." "But my son! I'll never see him grow up!" "Rules are rules ma'am." "Please, help me." Setting Scarlett down for a moment chatterbox went up to the robot. "I'll stay behind, the woman can have my spot on the transport." Chatterbox said. "Oh my god! Thank you so much!" The woman hugged chatterbox and thanked him profusely. "It's nothing ma'am, I can make it out in the wilderness, I'm a guardian." As Scarlett was carried aboard the transport by one of the robots, she looked back to see chatterbox standing there, waving. She waved back, and just before the loading doors closed, Scarlett felt a wave of dread wash over her, sending chills up her spine.
