I understand that they're trying to make a breathing and dynamic world but here's my issue with being always online.
What happens if you don't have a connection but have been a Bungie fan for years?
Well tough.
What happens if you lose connection and now all you have is a 60 dollar Frisbee?
Well nuts to you.
What happens years from now when you're growing old in your years and want to show the grand kids what gaming was like for you growing up
or you just want to replay Destiny but all the servers have been shut down?
Oh well.
Basically to sum things up I'm just confused why Bungie would move in this direction of gaming. I don't really expect to be answered or Jason Jones
to come down from on high to give me his two cents but seriously they could have at least made it an option for people to play offline.
TL:DR I was wondering what the rationale behind making it online only at the detriment of anyone who doesn't have a connection.
I also was wondering if anyone thinks it might be possible to release a patch post launch to allow offline play or does anyone think that might be to tall of an order even for Bungie?

They felt like the pros of always online outweighed the cons. Here's a few of the pros that aren't listed since you already listed some of the obvious cons to always online: Less hacking/glitching/duping. If you look at games like Borderlands 2 and Diablo 3 (on console). By allowing the game to be hosted on your own machine, people can hack the local save file and put in overpowered equipment, which in some peoples' opinion ruins a game. I agree with that. Another pro is progress saving. You've just beat the meanest, baddest raid ever and were lucky enough to get an amazing exotic. Woot! Great job! But wait, power outage and your console shut off before you could save. Nooo! Or your console fries, HDD dies, etc list goes on. You lost everything. Always online stores your save on their side. Safer that way. Better game quality. By being always online, they can statistically track gameplay. Are people falling through the earth and dying in the same spit repeatedly? Let's patch that. Are hand cannons used by less than 5% of the player base? Let's buff them to equal them out with other weapons. On the fly. No immediate patch required! Anyways, I see your cons and don't deny that they are valid points. There are advantages and disadvantages to only online. Bungie and Activision came to the conclusion that their product would be better or make more money by always being online. I personally don't mind but I can see where you're coming from.

I supposedly have the cheapest and slowest cable connection and playing on the ps3 and my beta experience was fine.

1 ReplyCould people without internet stay off the internet please?
-
Because that's how Bungie wanted to make the game.
-
Well... at least you have a frisbee that sparkles in the sunlight.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE tIME!!!

You will get over it. It was made to be played online. This is like complaining that you can't play WoW offline. Or that you can't play ps2 games online anymore. Hell there are ps3 games that have already shut down there servers. Hell no one can play RAGE or Blacklight: tango down anymore. Online only games. And I have copy's of both for ps3 that I can't play at all. I got over it. Some games are just gonna be like that now. You know these things going in when you buy it. Or at least you should. If this is something that ruins the buy for you. I'm sorry. But you can't really make a game that will make everyone happy can you? That's impossible.

1 ReplyIn today's Day and Age, it would be near impossible to keep up without the internet. How would someone even know about Destiny without the Internet?
-
It's 60$ and everyone in your home can play (on xbox one at least) and yeah TOUGH it's a living breathing world and if your too cheap and your gonna complain just don't play
-
The only con is when you don't have internet access you can't play, or when PSN or Live is down.
-
Server-side saves, so less prone to hacking. It's a shared world shooter, you couldn't do this with offline games. It's specifically designed for online play. If you want offline play you'll have to buy something else.

20 RepliesThis game is not even close to an MMO unless the first M stands for medium. I too would like to know why it's always online. If you cant matchmake a raid or talk to anyone outside your fireteam. This is one of the most anti social games I have ever seen, yet you need to be connected to the internet to play. It's a valid question
-
9 RepliesBecause Bungie can. If Microsoft tried to do always online they would get crucified.

3 RepliesEdited by RH Azure: 8/24/2014 5:02:08 AMI say this, similar to another post here: If you lose your electricity and you want your A/C on, tough luck. If your connection screws up and you want to play Destiny, tough luck. You need electricity for A/C, and you need a connection for Destiny. That's how they were designed to work. You can have a fan instead of A/C, but that is not as effective. It is not A/C. If you could play Destiny offline, it would not be as how the game was designed. It would not be Destiny.
-
1 ReplyDestiny is meant to be experienced with other players. a social (ish) experience. Its all a part of what makes destiny so unique and amazing. The players are part of the experience. Taking them away would lessen the experience that is destiny IMMENSELY. Imagine flying to every destination possible in destiny in quick succession. You encounter no fellow guardians. As if you are the only one left in the universe. In fact, at that moment, you are. Thats not what was, or ever will be meant for Destiny.

Two good thing whit always online is fast patches if threes a bug , also they can monitor if something is wrong ore OP they can fix fast. and some games are always online like wow, eve, svtor, bf3&4 and so on. if you want to be retrograde then go back to the old consoles and leave the new to those who wants it.

2 RepliesEdited by Gubzs: 8/23/2014 10:46:15 PMIf they let people play offline, the console itself would have to run all of the AI / loot / weather / spawning systems for the world. This would cause you an undue amount of lag, and would probably render the game unplayable, given that it was optimized for having the world be managed serverside. In addition, you could simply disconnect your Xbox during a timed event, and mess with your console clock to be able to do timed events for an infinite period of time offline. Boom, the game's entire immersion system is broken, and a form of cheating introduced. YW for the actual answer.

Always online seems to be the direction in which we a 're going, I don't mind though. I spend 99% of my gaming online anyway. And honestly how often does your net cut out? Power outages are the only time I've gone without net in the last 3 years, I don't think my consoles are much use to me in those circumstances. Only wish the original xbone drm plans had stuck but I can see why people opposed it.
-
Well halo MCC is coming out in November so you should be fine... Welcome to the 21st century man... If you want the best out of gaming you need to move somewhere with good internet connection lol.
-
2 RepliesBecause they made Destiny instead of the game that you're thinking of. It sucks to lose Internet, sure. But so does losing electricity. What if that happens? Should they make a steam-engine, or hamster wheel powered console, because what if?
-
1 ReplySorry, this isn't the 90's anymore. The internet plays a more powerful role these days. Besides, it has opened up way more exciting possibilities and features that wouldn't be available if there was no internet capabilities.

That sucks

19 RepliesSimple really. Because MMO's require the internet.
And yes, Distiny is a MMO, so don't bother with the Bungie renamed the MMO as a shared world shooter, so it's not a MMO even though it is.
1 ReplyEdited by BlackWrath313: 8/24/2014 12:42:21 AMOnline was the purpose of the game. They specifically said they wanted to create an online console gaming experience like no other. It's your fault if you read that wrong. Destiny was meant to be an ONLINE EXPERIENCE! It's 2014 people wake up and stop living in the past!!!

5 RepliesYou can play offline...Don't expect Raids, Strikes, or even Crucible. You sound like you are from a third world country.
