I think that it's because most people don't have any experience with the military other than the little bit that the military wants us to see. The police, on the other hand, are common to see. Most of our involvement with the police involves dealing with tickets, and getting arrested, and other such irritations.
It's way easier to revere the people who "defend your freedom" than the people who write speeding tickets.

Partially true. In my opinion, having served, it's far easier for me to revere someone for their time in the military than it is for me to revere a LEO. Reason being, a soldier would never act against his fellow countrymen, brother in arms, or even foreigner unless they have presented themselves as a clear threat. Police, on the other hand, the majority of the time are incrediably power hungry and will use any excuse possible to use one of their nifty gadgets. Now, not to say when we got shot at we didn't instantly turn with huge puppy eyes to the lucky SOAB with the AT-4, or .50 cal, etc. and REALLY want to use it, but there's a huge difference between acting on someone shooting at you as such rather than an unarmed civilian. This isn't just internet BS where I saw a few youtube videos like most on here and jumped to conclusions, this is after having a lot of friends who are LEO's along with having a few run-ins with them before. The thing is, for soldiers the vast majority are good people, with the bad ones being the minority. For the police, however, it's the other way around.

oh, don't forget the kent state shooting, too.

Kent was a cluster-blam!- of arson. arrests, and aggression and violence toward the peacekeeping force days before the shooting broke out.

Or that you believe American servicemen and women would act any differently from soldiers of other countries instructed by superiors to do something some may consider “distasteful”.

You're an idiot if you believe that, and I actually question your service in the military. I wouldn't think one could spout so much shit that I'd rather smell an Ethiopian village.

Have you served in the military?
