I'm thinking that there won't be a huge difference between the best weapon in the game vs the worst weapon in the game, in terms of strict DPS.
Bungie has already said that kill times in Destiny are much shorter than Halo. You wouldn't be able to say that unless a) your encounters are scaled based on your weapon's potential, or b) there isn't a wide range.
I'm thinking the difference between the weapons will be 1 or 2 shots to kill for slower firing weapons, 3 or 4 shots to kill for mid range weapons, and maybe 5 or 6 for your fastest weapons.
The incentive to go back out into the world for better loot is not in your damage dealing potential, but in the other behaviors of the weapons. (Closing time cloaks the user while ADS)

Edited by astral: 12/29/2013 9:12:48 PMLet's hope its about like Guild Wars 2's legendaries. Where they look 1000% cooler and have a little extra damage but thats it. Rather than being above and beyond better than maxed weapons like in World of Warcraft. That would make everyone mad and hardly anyone playing MP cause their gear isn't good enough just for death match. Or maybe there will be just gear scaling where anyone gets the same base stats just looks different and has different abilities. That would be the easiest way to probably not piss everyone off.

Encounters are always scaled by a number of factors and I'm positive the exotic items are going to be kick ass compared to vendor trash.
-
So, by scaling encounters, you're suggesting that PvP play will only pair you up against other players with similar damage/armor potential.
-
No, I was talking about PvE, but PvP is usually scaled by some sort of MMR. Only pairing you agains players with similar skill and gear. I don't think gear will mater as much in PvP unless there is gear that drops with stats better for PvP scenarios.
-
I don't think we'll see much scaling. Or at least I hope we don't.

Skill is usually the determining factor for everything, as well as latency. We don't know anywhere enough to say things set in stone, but from what we know, I'm almost positive that there is at least 10 factors that will determine "Match making" also, we know there is not PvP match making system, so I have no idea if it will be a PvP zone that you will have to travel to so that you can fight other players, or if that PvP is faction based, or if there is world PvP. Come the new year, bungie should start cranking out all the hype media so that people get excited and know more and want to buy their game.
