Why did 343i completely change the look of forerunner tech?

  • Because everything of a alien race that has existed for Eons isn't diverse and must look exactly the same. Perfect example being how all human buildings look the same and always have.

They didn't, it is still recognisably Forerunner but at the same time it's a completely different style of architecture because the Shield Worlds were built by the Warrior-Servants, not the Builders who created the Halos. Requiem's architecture is very similar to what we see in Halo Wars because that was also a Warrior-Servant installation. The Miner caste of Forerunner society is described by Bornstellar (a Builder) as using aesthetically displeasing architecture and technology compared to the designs of other castes. One of their ships is said to possess things like "grapplers, lifters, cutters, and churners" on their 'bellies', like the Gatherer from Halo: Blood Line. No race is ever going to have a unanimous style of architecture. Just look at the wealth of variety the human race has today when it comes to how we design buildings and structures across different cultures, it's the same for the Forerunners - their society was made up of many castes, all with their distinct architectural style and such.

I don't think it was completely changed. The architecture was still angular, large in scope, and pretty simple. They did emphasise the markings a bit more, though, which made it look that much more ancient. A large part of why things were different was also because we now had active Forerunner tech rather than it being inert, as it has been prior to Halo 4. The attached image is small, but you can see it's still pretty much the same when you're not around the active technology. Just a simple hallway. Looks very similar to the corridors you walked through as you may your way to Halo's control room, at the end of Halo 3; only prettier.
