Cross Platform Saving

As we all know, Destiny is going to be put on as many platforms that Bungie can make possible. Hopefully, there will be a PC version in the times to come. So, let's create a scenario. I make a character on my brand new Xbox One (or Ps4, 360, whatever). Now, this character becomes super powerful, and I've invested dozens of hours into making him the persona he is today. BOOM! Destiny comes out for PC (or I wanna switch consoles or something). So, I want to get it for PC instead of my measly console. But wait! You have a spectacular character that you've put many tens of hours into crafting! What happens to him? Will Bungie have a cross platform sort of system in order for me to transfer my beloved creation? Or am I doomed to be stuck to one single console? Alright, thanks for bearing with me there. That's the best I could get the point across. I suspect Bungie will be operating Destiny in a sort of, cloud based system. This would allow players to break the platform barrier, and would make Destiny far more convenient for everybody. What do you think? Is it possible?

  • Simple Answer: No. Complex Answer: As it stands now, if you create a character on your Xbox 360 for a cross-platform game, regardless of who developed or published the game, all information is stored on servers dedicated to the Xbox 360, and the same with the PS3. These servers are designed and built using code specific to the console that they service, therefore all character information would be in the program code for the console that you created the character on, and transferring a character from one platform to another would require a translation from one set of code to another...now here's the problem...Microsoft own the copyright to their code while Sony own the copyright to their code and God knows who owns the PC code...a translation program would require a single entity/developer/program to have, use and alter all three codes and to be honest, can you imagine that ever happening? Because here's the thing, Bungie LICENSE the code used to make their game work on the Xbox and PS3 from Microsoft and Sony, and because your character is created using specific code, transferring it to another platform would require you to alter that code and change it to fit the other platform...altering code...altering intellectual property...copyright infringement...can you imagine that being authorised? Never mind the fact that the platform you started on would potentially be losing out on revenue from online purchases to your new platform, so they'd essentially be helping their rival to make money while they lose money...can you see that happening? Now imagine that, somehow, Bungie manage to take your character information and have it so that there is NO platform specific code anywhere in there. You essentially have a character that COULD be dropped onto any platform and played instantly without any problems...you still have a physicality problem. A Bungie employee, or whoever oversees their servers must physically download your character from the server to a form of mobile storage, walk across the room or over to the building with the servers for your new platform, physically connect that storage device, download your character, integrate it into the new server so that your story is at the same point, your inventory contains all of the items it did, your in-game achievements are registered properly, and so on and so forth...you see the problem? How much of that information WOULD contain platform specific code? So basically, if every platform owner authorises and licenses a third party to alter and change and transmute their intellectual property, then yes, you could theoretically transfer from one platform to another. But as it stands now...don't count on it...
