Though I have no idea where you heard 3km x 3km. Can you give us a source for that?
I like the idea of breaking it up into smaller zones. The Skyrim model was cool, but there was so much empty space that I ended up wishing for more stuff to populate the world in which I explored. If breaking it up into more manageable areas means more encounters, more finely crafted enemy engagements and tactical terrain elements, then I'm all for breaking the game up. A few loading screens will not be the end of me.
