I've just gotten both Bioshock 1 and Infinite from Gamefly. I have never played any of the series. Should I play the series in order or start with Infinite? I've heard Infinite is a different story altogether and isn't relevant, it's also the one I really want to play.
On the flip-side, if I play Infinite first, will Bioshock (1) be a let down from there? Does it still hold up?

1 ReplyOkay well I'm like 4ish hours into Bioshock, I've just gotten the Chemical Thrower. How much more is there to it? I actually don't mind finishing it off now. Should I bother with 2?

3 RepliesPlay the first two, forget Infinite. The game goes to utter shit after 2-3 hours and never recovers from a heaping pile of incoherent plotlines, terrible writing, an awful midgame slump, entirely nonsensical time travel mechanics, and it becomes readily apparent that the gameplay is just as shallow as Call of Duty. The first one has its amazing atmosphere going for it, the second has its far superior gameplay and environments going for it. The only thing going for Infinite is the opening. Once you pass the Hall of Heroes it's all downhill. I honestly can't see how people think Infinite is so great. The gameplay is even weaker than the first's, is incredibly dumbed down in every aspect, the story is far from deep and is riddled with gargantuan plotholes, the writing in a lot of places was really weak, and the ending was so bad it ruined everything.

Yeah play Bioshock 1 first, then Infinite. You don't have to play Bioshock 2 to be honest.

1 ReplyPlay in order. Infinite is absolutely amazing, but there are references in Infinite that you won't get without knowing about Bioshock.

Play them in order

Edited by Tartan 118: 5/10/2013 11:25:18 AMBioShock 1 has far superior gameplay, as broad as the likes of Deus Ex with combat choices. Plus it's the first in the series, not that they're necessarily sequential. Infinite has a better story, but I'd play Bio1 first, if I were you.

5 RepliesPlayed 5 minutes of Bioshock and was about to play Infinite when I noticed something in the trailer/intro thing of the main menu. Booker heading towards Rapture and a Big Daddy looking guy without a helmet. Should I finish Bioshock before or is it safe to move on?

I'd say Infinite is much better, but play the 1st one first. Like the other guy said, if you go from Infinite to Bioshock 1, it will feel outdated. Plus, Infinite has a better/more interesting story, and there is a little nod back to the original at one point.

BioShock is far superior as a game, but it doesn't matter where you start from a story perspective.

I just finished the first Bioshock, and just started Infinite. Been playing Infinite for about 3 hours. Bioshock was amazing. The plot, the ending, the entire game I fell in love with it. Bioshock Infinite seems to be just as good, but I'll reserve my final judgements. I heard Infinite wasn't as good as Bioshock, but nevertheless is a fantastic game.

Play Infinite first. If you played Bioshock first I suspect it would make Infinite seem less goodlike.

1 ReplyShould I even bother playing Bioshock?

Definitely start with BioShock or else you won't understand the significance of some things in Infinite.
-
Bioshock 1 first. Go from bad to good. Not saying Bioshock 1 is bad...it's just not as good graphically and gameplay wise. I like Bioshock 1 better. It was revolutionary.

It's not essential, but the first BioShock is actually pretty important to the atmosphere of Infinite. You can give the second one a miss, though.

Infinite has no relation to the first and second BioShocks. The reason it's called BioShock is because it has the same central themes running through it, just updated/tweaked. That said, if you play Infinite first, you may be disappointed with the original's mechanics since they have become dated since then.

Probably best to go with the first game to get a hang of how it plays, I'd imagine you'd be missing all the colour/skyhooks from Columbia if you go there first before you head to Rapture
