Struggling to think of a way to have NPC's die in my game, yet still be alive in others'.
I dont know how that would work. I dont see Destiny taking this approach.

It is possible if you make it so that missions that had the dead NPC in are now no longer available. That would only work if they weren't an integral character to any linear narrative though

Exactly.

Like I said it's still possible though. For example say that there's a character you meet when you first start the game. His job is role is to assign the guardian recruit to their role. He would be kind of like the character olivander from harry potter, in the sense that everybody would have a connection with the character because every guardian was initiated by him (in the same way everyone got their wand from olivander). Have it so that a mission comes up on the bounty section with the info 'Galathor has been kidnapped, priority one all guardians to locate and rescue'. Every player would have a time limit (as with all other bounty missions), because the detailed info says that he has been taken by the fallen and being held at ransom. The fallen want to trade him for a piece of secret technology being held in the tower. The leader of the last city has said that this isn't an option and so all guardians are to attempt an all-out assault on the fallen compound. This mission however would be an impossible one in which all guardians who attempt it inevitably fail. When the time limit ends the fallen broadcast his execution to all guardians and warn that this is just the start if the secret technology is not handed over to them. Players can view a playback of the recording if they missed it live, and any new recruits starting the game after the time at which the old recruiter is taken shall meet a new one in his place. Thus the world remains persistent while allowing a character that is meaningful to all players to die.

i'm guessing this could work if phased, but not sure if there will be such thing in Destiny.
