In general. There are some good ones like this season's craftable but the class of weapons as a whole is generally not in a great spot.
When it comes to pvp In most cases I don't see much reason to run an auto over an smg at closer range. or an auto over a pulse at longer ranges. and the mid range in HC dominant. I've shot people and had them turn around and kill me. Had them very easily just run away to cover etc etc. I know balancing them for pvp is very tricky since Bungie doesn't want an auto meta, though frankly I feel a gun that is made to kill you if you're caught out in the open kind of makes sense but that's just me.
So I feel the strength of the autos in pvp should be in their ability to combat and inflict flinch if any sort of damage buff is off the table. It would help with consistency as autos are generally harder to get optimal ttk with then most weapons even without being flinched and would make them actually feel threatening if i'm trying to shoot at someone instead of them just 3 tapping me with HC or two bursting me with a pulse anyways or even if not i'm usually flinched out of not getting the crits i need to even keep an OK TTK and i'll need to break off anyways. I think it should focus more on stability for the lower RPM and over into more flinch for higher RPM but depending on the weapons themselves maybe a bit of both is needed, emphasis on a bit mostly.
Now in pve they just don't really do good damage most of the time. I can run them just fine and I enjoy using them but they just don't perform all that well to the point that the last two raids that were reprised BOTH had autos in D1 (Atheon's Epilogue and Anguish of Drystan) and they just decided to skip them this time because the class as a whole isn't very good frankly.
They really need some more damage across the board, maybe not a lot but something. Even the perk that seems like it would be made for spray and pray weapons Gutshot Straight gets less benefit then if it was on a HC or a bow (10% vs 20%) and it just sucks being a fan of these and loving using the Actium War Rig and really only feeling like having infinite ammo kind of helps them keep up with other weapons. Exotic Autos are kind of a different story as they can kill better but really most of the time they're a for fun weapon sadly that you wouldn't use the exotic slot on in the first place. You CAN, but it's obviously not the best idea.
That's all though just wanted to mention it a bit is all.
As a small Addendum just to help emphasize the problem here. AB auto is here this season! I like it personally. I don't think anyone in their right mind would actually use it for it's intended purpose in higher level content since Scouts are safer and we have AB sniper to outshine it anyways!
