Bungie... can we talk?

Can we talk about color? I used to assume that all the ugly shaders coming out were a well intended accident. The result of well meaning designers pushing the envelope, trying to do something kool, and missing the mark. Now, I'm not so sure. Before I go on let me clarify that there certainly are shaders I love, and on occasion Bungie does add new shaders I like (though thats pretty rare). I am beginning to wonder if the striking lack of good shaders is some weird ill thought tactic meant to motivate us to buy Eververse ornaments. But that does't really make any sense, considering that the Armor Ornaments still use shaders. The new and existing gear, both weapons as well as armor, and their ornaments respond so unpredictably to shaders. Often gear & ornaments even have areas that never change regardless of what shader is applied. While I recognize that sometimes this is intentional, I have found many examples on gear, including gear for major events like Iron Banner, where these spots that don't change are clearly a design mistake or oversight. Btw, these 'unshadable' areas basically doom that appearance never to be used. The unpredictable response to shaders gives the impression that Bungie has NO STANDARD for shader application to gear and that every designer is just making it up as they go. I have seen SO MANY requests for increased options for shader application on our gear, yet Bungie ignores this completely. Is this designer ego? Are the existing gear and ornaments so convoluted in their response to shaders that Bungie CAN'T fix the problem without a top to bottom rework of the system? Does bungie not have well developed software for managing and designing all these interactions? So Bungie, whats really going on here? No, really Bungie, enlighten me. I have 20+ years as a graphic designer and this problem utterly perplexes me. ______________________________ Edit: An addition thought as well as a clarification... First, the clarification; when I said "ugly", I should have given more context. Perhaps I would have been better to call those Shaders "ugly to me" or even better, "useless to me". Color on its own is a matter of personal preference, style, and/or identity. While color on its own can be popular or unpopular, there is no right or wrong color if considered in the absence of context, or in other words; how it will be used. Even a collection of colors, as in the case of shaders, any valuation of the collection can only be made Gunship ____________________________________

  • Whether a shader is considered ugly or not is completely subjective. Maybe the artists that designed these so called "ugly" shaders think they look great. I would like to see a custom shader option in the game, because out of several hundred owned, I struggle to find even 20 that I like, but we most likely wont see that in this game. Maybe in D3...

It's time to allow exotic ornaments to be transmog on legendaries. Im ready to make my hunter look amazing and every other character. Don't give me that bull about needing to identify what a guy is wearing. If you can see his exotic armor in battle chances are you're already dead.

    • Shaders mainly consist of primary and secondary colors/textures for both hard and soft materials (for 4 combinations), along with some tertiary colors not shown in the icon. What seems to be the "main" color on a shader can easily change, especially on armor because each class has different styles: Titan armor is mostly hard materials, Warlock armor is mostly soft materials, and Hunters seem to be a mix of the two. It is not obvious which hard/soft materials are set to use the primary or secondary colors, which are set by the armor/weapon designers. It's also not visible in the UI, but the Default Shader almost always uses a real shader that you can unlock in your Collections under the hood. A good example of this is the seasonal weapons from Ketchcrash/Expeditions, which all use either Dusted Tome (or maybe Rusted Coin, I forget which) so you won't see any difference from the default shader when picking that option on the appearance screen.

      • I’ve decided my eyes are broken. Not that the shader on screen rarely appears as the same colors on the armor piece. “Where did the blue color come from?”

      • Why not just make a few special shaders with cool effects and textures and let us design our own basic shaders in game with full slider options?

          • Art is subjective. It's really not that deep. In terms of design, the unpredictable nature of shaders comes from the variety of gear that has been released over the years. Hypothetically, Bungie could revamp the system to let us decide what shader is applied to every part of our gear, but that comes with a litany of its own issues.
