⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ OLD OUT OF TOUCH AND ANGRY ⚠️
Can somebody help justify this trend to me from a consumer’s perspective? Why on earth would you spend real money on in-game cosmetics?

I enjoy looking good, and these days all the good looks are paid. If I could work to look good in any game, I wouldn't spend much money at all, bar DLC and other playable content. Some games "technically" let you work to look good. They have these funny things called loot boxes, and the good stuff has a sweet .3% chance to drop. In games like Apex or R6, it's pretty likely you'll even get something with a tiny drop rate... For a hero/legend/operator/whatever you don't have. *anger*

Infinite’s a great game, isn’t it?

I can kind of get it to an extent. I had a friend who has every skin in Smite. When pressed about it, he said he just likes to collect things and it makes sense. People collect trading cards, guns, cars et cetera, but the difference is, those things are physical and can even be traded or liquidized. His digital collection is lost the moment he loses access to his account or servers are shut down. But, his money, his problem to deal with.

Weapon skins can -blam!- off. Costumes, I would only really care if it’s something I would use all the time. Otherwise it seems a waste. I’ve only really ever bought skins for beat-em-ups, because the whole point is to sit there and stare at your character beating up another one.

1 ReplyIt depends on a few factors. 1. How expensive is the cosmetic? 2. How much do I enjoy the game? 3. How big of a change is the cosmetic? If it’s a decent change, less than $1.50, and I enjoy the game very much, then I might grab one every now & then. Just a cool inexpensive way to add a little flair to a fun game. I’d never spend more than $2 on a cosmetic, though, unless it literally reskinned the entire game. Anything that’s just a palette swap is usually a no go as well. I also tend to avoid it if there’s more than just one or two; if there’s two dozen that just feels scummy. Of course, I’d much rather them have the skins unlockable in-game, but I don’t mind throwing some pocket change a game’s way for a cool look.

you know how peacocks show off there feathers to attract mates, and the one with the best feathers gets the mate. its like that

If the game is free I’ll spend a little money on it

Patiently awaiting Kelly's essay on the topic.

Edited by Cobravert: 9/10/2022 12:26:55 PMI can't. Sorry. I've never understood it myself other than corporate greed and many people's seemingly incessant desire to glamourize themselves or show off how much money the can waste. I liked it better when you had to earn the pedestal armor pieces. It actually meant something to have and wear them.
