I'm sharing these ideas for some input, and which of the two seems cooler. (These are generalized versions, and I am willing to discuss and answer questions regarding them.
The Entity. In a not-so-distant future, a large object of spectacular and alien origin arrives in orbit of our planet. It begins to violently terraform or planet for un-known purposes. Our weapons prove ineffective, and all hope is seemingly lost, till a small team manages to preach the object and fight the alien crew. They stop the terraforming but are now trapped on the object. From their new prison however, they manage to uplift humanity into a new golden age using the technology on the object. But over time their blessings become less frequent, and the earth is subjected to odd storms and new government regimes. Decades past the from the object the new world rulers seem insistent that they must remake the world. A rebel force launches their own team to the object to find the original team unaged and violently defending their seats of power. After defeating the old team, the rebels are contacted by the object, it claims to be a victim of the old team's tyranny, but this new crew has proven themselves to be heroic champions of humanity, who else would be better to shape a better world?
The Doctrine The void is vast and uncaring, only the dim lights of distant stars from years long gone shine on the path we call the Doctrine. Humanity reached for distant worlds and had no method of incredible speed. Through genetic modification and marvels of engineering, artificial sleep would preserve the passengers of great colony ships through their millennia long voyage. Each ship was given a document of laws, the doctrine of society, so that in time a scattered humanity may re-unite under common beliefs. The fourth colony awakens, builds their civilization carefully adhering to the doctrine's principles and eventually achieve what their ancestors could not, FTL. They begin the search for the other colonies in order to re-unite humanity, but before finding another colony they are besieged by a strange alien force and are forced into a multi system conflict. Eventually another colony finds them, but they are different, they followed the doctrine, but came to different conclusions thus do not unify against the alien scourge and instead demand that the fourth colony bend to their views. It is only after many long years of war however that it is revealed that the alien's aren't so different and can be communicated with. They too were distant travelers following a set of laws to guide them through unforgiving space. They call their laws, The Doctrine.

3 RepliesI found both intriguing, but I prefer the first, as the storyline of "the aliens weren't so different" has been played out in so many ways, I feel it would be hard to make a unique spin on it.
