• Pretty sure just everyone & their mum has already heard of all of these, and you didn’t even describe why we should play them; just threw their names out as though they need more publicity or something. But here, let me make a list, too. CrossCode
You know the whole Zelda thing where you go into a dungeon, solve puzzles, get a dungeon item, then use that item to solve the rest of the dungeon? Okay, so imagine that, but you’re also the Avatar, and your dungeon items are the four elements. Throw in some super fun & flashy combat, and then you have CrossCode! This game has one of my favorite combat systems I’ve ever played, some of the best puzzles I’ve ever seen in a non-puzzle game, and while the story doesn’t start off great, it becomes surprisingly engaging later on!
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
One half rice farming sim, one half demon slaying, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is the best “split genre” game I’ve ever seen! The two halves of the game are woven together flawlessly, and the game is filled with so many examples of genius game design! Both halves of the game are very well made in their own right, and are a blast when put together! The story’s pretty fun, too, and I love basically every character!
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
Metroidvanias are my favorite genre, and Ender Lilies is my favorite Metroidvania! You play as Lily, a White Priestess, in a mingdom overrun by the Blight—a disease that’s transformed everyone into undead monsters! Only the Priestesses have the power to end these beasts by “Purifying” them. Lily also has the power to summon spooky ghosts, which she uses in place of weapons! Every time you beat a boss or miniboss, you recruit their Spirit to your side for a devastating new ability! Bosses are all unique, but minibosses are basically suped up versions of regular baddies, meaning almost every enemy you see can join your team at some point! On top of that, your moveset is completely customizable! Light medium & ranged attack? Sure! All ranged? Of course! A bunch of support skills? Well that’s a bad idea, but you can do it! The story is a little awkwardly written at times, but is pretty good overall!
One Step From Eden
Grid based bullet hell deck building Roguelike! You know Mega Man Battle Network, right? Where you’re on that 4x8 Grid, blasting baddies from your own zone towards enemies? Imagine that, but crank upthe intesity to 11, add in some deck building, and there you go! OSFE is frantic, fast paced fun, with an amazing array of spells at your disposal! The story is a little nonexistent, but that’s okay. One of my favorite games to just pick up & play for a round or two!
Indivisible
A strange sort of turn based/fighting game hybrid, Indivisible has you controlling a gang of four heroes taking on baddies using simplified fighting game mechanics in a pseudo-turn based setting. If you like the idea of building combos, but don’t have the skills to play a full blown fighter, Indivisible still hits that fantasy, while being much easier! Admittedly, the ending stretch of the game is a little lacking, but the rest of the game is brilliant enough to more than make up for it!
Voice of Cards
Turn based RPGs, with a fun card game aesthetic. The first one, Isle Dragon Roars, is a little easy, but the second, Forsaken Maiden, is darn near perfect! They use one of my favorite turn based mana systems, and both were loads of fun! Plus, the story is written by none other than Yoko Taro, the mind behind the NieR & Drakengard games, so you know they’re good! The third one is coming out pretty soon, too!
The World Ends With You (and Neo)
Probably the most well known games I’ll recommend on here, these games (TWEWY & Neo: TWEWY) are some of the best action RPGs out there! Both have incredibly unique fighting systems, an amazing art style, and even more amazing stories! Neo is a little more accessible, but both are worth playing if you can get over the first one’s learning curve! If you can’t, though, it did get made into an anime, so you can watch that then play Neo!
Sayonara Wild Hearts
Magical girl biker gangs. Enough said. This game is just a huge power trip! It’s not very long, but man if you’re ever feeling down, this game might be just what youneed to feel amazing, as you fight giant robot wolves, fly around on a sword like it’s a hoverboard, and just all around go about being a bada**! All set to a great soundtrack, too!
And finally, Skullgirls
My favorite game ever, Skullgirls is a2D fighting game! Unlike most fighting games, Skullgirls gives you a very in depth tutorial, making it a great game to get into the genre with, and it’s one of the few fighting games these days to use 6 attack buttons rather than the standard four, which is great! How good the story is depends on which character you’re playing, but generally speaking the 8 original characters don’t have as well written stories as the DLC. Speaking of, all the original DLC is free with the purchase of the Second Encore version, and they’re putting out a new wave of DLC as we speak! Second Encore isn’t available on Xbox atm, but it’s coming soon!
And there are probably more I could recommend, but my arm is tired, so ta-da!
