Okay, the stranger is obviously Gandalf, knew it from his first scream

Yeah if you saw the PJ movies, that was a serious Easter egg. That would happen every time Gandalf would lose his temper and let some sense of his true power leak out.
-
If that's Gandalf I'm gonna be pissed. Canonically, he arrived with the rest of the Ishtari knowing his purpose and is actively meant to mingle in the affairs of the free peoples. Who knows at this point, but there is no reason to think that is him, given anything Tolkien wrote.

They aren’t going to rigidly adhere to what Tolkien wrote. Like I told people 20 years ago when the PJ movies came out: Changes need to be made to books in order to make them into good screen plays. Because you can get away with things in books that you can’t in movies. The same is true in TV series. Olorin/Gandalf didn’t come to Middle-earth to fight Sauron until the Third Age. But that doesn’t mean that he didn’t visit it before for other reasons. Members of the Valar and Maiar did for various reasons. Hell, Aragorn is a descendant of a Maiar spirit (Melian) who came to visit, fell in love and married the guy would be be king of the Sindar Elves. The best way to enjoy something like this is to hold the books loosely. and just see it as a chance to enjoy someone else’s vision of Middle-earth. People who approached PJs movies with that mindset, enjoyed them. Those who didn’t, just got mad. But their anger wound up being lost to time… What frustrates me here is that so many people are spending their energy looking for reasons to be mad…some for money and clicks on YouTube…than for reasons to enjoy what’s being done. This is a TV series that looks and feels like a feature film. It’s that gorgeous…and it is well written and acted.

I understand the need for changes, but to be honest, I just think this is kind of a bad change. Gandalf had a functional origin story, but instead, ROP brings something new into a story that is already quite bloated as is. Its not that I can't take change, however this change just does seem terribly conducive to telling the story they are trying to tell. It might work out, who knows, but thus far it seems like the least necessary of the storylines.

-
Nope. Gandalf didn’t arrive in middle earth till year 1500 of the third age.
-
It's Gandalf. They don't give a rip about following the books. Hence, why I stopped watching it. It's too jarring.
-
What all have you read?
-
The Simarillion years ago, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings multiple times. Honestly, it's been so long ago that I read the Simarillion, I'm not always sure what is following Tolkien and what isn't.
-
Galadriel leading the Noldar across the ice wastes is in the Silmarillion. Elendil and Isildur crossing the seas is in the Silmarillion as well. Elrond was sent to work with Celebrimbor. They actually do use a lot, it’s just hard to make a series out of foot notes.
-
Valid point but looking at how they interpret tolkiens work, it isn’t exactly straight from his books as far as the story goes. Point is, I’m sure they’ll change a lot in this show

Yep, talks to bugs, has a gray beard, magic powers, and loves halflings. 100%Gandalf
