Too much, but unavoidable. LOTRs had the luxury of being able to focus on a single character (Frodo) and then build outwards…gradually. Although Celebrimbor is the central character that the series will revolve around, there is a crap ton of worldbuilding they had to get out of the way so that future events will make sense. My fear is that they are trying to get through it too fast and will lose people.

  • Yeah. It was unavoidable but I wish they did more showing than telling. Otherwise I’m very interested

  • They are doing a lot of showing. But you have to either really know Toliens work —-or the Peter Jackson movies—-very well to pick up on it. For example:
Galadriel’s brother, Finrod, died at the hands of Sauron. He was captured and the tortured to death by werewolves. The show doesn’t say this. Instead we are shown his body. With claw marks and the Eye of Sauron carved into it.
Also:
The stranger that fell from the skyl and was found by the Harfoot (hobbit ancestors) was almost certainly Gandalf/Olorin. All the visual clues to his identity were pulled from the PJ movies or the Book of Westmarch (LOTRs). One thing that got past me is that the two guys running around with the gigantic moose antlers were probably the two Blue Wizards visiting Middle-earth.
I think they did a good job. The problem is the scope of the source material is so huge. The second age is covered in an appendix in the LOTRs, but what Amazon is really trying to do is cover parts of The Silmarillion without have the rights to it, and avoiding legal problems. The first time I read it, as a kid, I quit in frustration. I just got lost. The second time I had to read it with a pen and paper in hand—as an adult—just so I could make sense of it all. But that is because you are covering THOUSANDS of years of ME history.
Just the prologue itself in going from the Darkening of Valinor, to the War of Wrath covers over 600 years…and IIRC, most of the first two episodes are over 1000 years into the Second Age.
• My issue with the telling was the extended narration at the beginning. I like what’s going on other wise

Again, necessary. You had to cover the entire history of the Darkening of Valinor, theft of the Silmarils, and the Wars of Beleriand in the First Age in order for ANY of the events of the Second Age that are being covered to make sense: Major spoiler:
The War of Wrath (the war scene in the prologue) saw Valinor empty and -blam!- war upon the forces of Morgoth in order to finally defeat him. But it devastated Middle-earth. One third of its land (Beleriand) broke off and sank into the ocean like Atlantis. Parts of what remained were severely damaged. The burden of immortality for the Elves is that they respond to change very poorly. Think of it as toxic nostalgia that they can’t get over. They can’t let go of what’s been lost. Sauron will use this to manipulate Celebrimbor and the Elven-smiths into creating the Rings of Power. Celebrimbor wanted to create magical objects that would heal the damage done to the world by war, and preserve its beauty. He succeeded with the three Elven rings that were untouched by Sauron. But 17 other rings that he either made or helped to make were corrupted to other ends.
I know, it can be frustrating and tough to follow. It’s why I worry about the pacing as well.’ They may have bitten off more than anyone can chew, narratively.
