I think I made it halfway through the first episode. For whatever reason it just wasn’t compelling. A snow troll appeared and I felt no sense of danger, didn’t really care if any of the Abercrombie models died.
Edit: upon second viewing, I tried to be less cynical. It’s not *that* bad. I probably had unrealistic expectations set by Peter Jackson’s LOTR, along with the rest of us naysayers.

That seems significantly more indicative of your attention span than the quality of the show. I don't know about you, but it seemed very obvious that Galadriel's company were meant to be expendable characters and the point of that scene was to demonstrate the her fanatical approach to following each lead. They were unnamed extras, you weren't supposed to care about them.

Because it takes time to get to know the characters. And the scope of what they are trying to do is so huge that they don’t have the luxury of introducing them slowly.

I felt the same thing, but it does get better. There are definitely moments later on and in the next episode where it feels like there's a real threat.
