I actually started and finished elden ring not too long ago. Went with a pretty straightforward strength build but that ended up biting me in the -blam!- once I got to the harder bosses. I ended up crutching on rebirthing so I could restat into the designated boss counter weapons most of the time Death blight is really cool, but it’s a shame it doesn’t work on 90% of enemies and bosses

 • Strength build and a Claymore never bites back. Lions Claw all the way.

 • Ngl that’s hella based, but going from barely making a dent in bosses because I was dual wielding great swords to first trying them with a new build kinda sucked the fun out of a lot of fights Like I could barely attack melania because my attack animations were about as fast as a crippled horse, then I swapped to an arcane fire build with mohgius’s spear and killed her in roughly 45 seconds not including cutscenes and buffs. Still have a video clip of that saved. Mohg, Radahn and radahn were really fun with pure melee though

 • Ultra greats swords kinna suck. It reminds me of heavy weapons in monster Hunter. Slow. However I like the claymore because of its decent speed, the art of war (I went and got the actual one from the Caelid Fort, night Lion, and dupped that just in case) and how when fully maxed I do almost 1000 a hit. I was able to beat Malenia with a Cold (poison also works) Claymore and a Mimic Tear (of course) Lots of stagger dmg. We did more dmg than Waterfowl healed. Maybe shoulda dual wielded but I forgot to try that and mostly used shield cause I want to use lions claw.

 • Tbh stagger builds work surprisingly well in the game for bosses. My friend told me that there was this one fire ash of war that dealt a -blam!- ton of poise damage with a decent bit of range to it too. Slapped that -blam!- on an erdtree dagger, mixed a poise damage physic and absolutely clapped maliketh without changing around my stats Honestly I didn’t dual wield until late game, and I did it after swapping off pure strength. I still am unsure how effective it is vs just jump attacking with 1 weapon. Basically, near the end I started using both sword of Ricardo milos and blasphemous blade so I got both health and fp regen after a kill. Honestly Milo’s is one of the best off hand weapons in the game due to that secondary effect in my opinion. really recommend anybody to use it if you use an ash of war focused build I also used shields a -blam!- ton, they really make a lot of stuff way less stressful. Nice for npc fights or cheesing encounters

 • On my first run, I basically went DexArc so I could use twinblades and blood (I love Bloodborne) so I ended up dual wielding normal with bloody slash, and elenoras. With my mimic tear I became a Beyblade of 1000 cuts Second character I used stronkth. And even though my offhand contained a shield (faith conduit if casting) I just never used it. Cause I keep forgetting I have a shield. It's mostly due to Bloodborne, I think, because I played that for basically two years before and did I mention I love it? So I got used to the gameplay and the thing is, Bloodborne has two shields. One is a dlc weapon that is used for magic, the other you get early on and calls you a coward. so I just forgot about them. I do think Bloodborne helped me with the fear of getting hit in combat. Love it. turtle shell on back is a useful shield though.

 •
turtle shell on back is a useful shield though.
True! I used the charm that gives the same effect instead but I can’t argue against how nice the stamina regen from it is. If you use a shield I would recommend you try it with a halberd or spear, since they get a unique move set that’s pretty versatile if you swap between 1 handing and 2 handing the weapon. Personally I prefer halberds, but bolt of grandad, one of the top tier 𝓼𝓵𝓲𝓬𝓴 weapons, is really damn fun. Giant dex requirement but not the highest out there, and you get a really good pve and pvp weapon out of it

 • Most death blight weapons/magic kill before the buildup procs the status. It was really strong back at the beginning of the game when builds were first being made and people weren’t that aggressive. It’s more of a gimmick now and you really have to build into it That’s not to say instant -blam!- death isn’t busted, but it’s still pretty sad that there is no secondary effect when you proc it on a non tarnished enemy. I think they could have made it work like bleed, where it takes a chunk out of an enemies health. Sort of like how frostbite and burn have similar effects
